Disappointing year for Westworld. I think it was deserving of Best Drama over Killing Eve (definitely) and Stranger Things (perhaps). The other nominees not sure, as I have only seen the Crown out of them. I would also have expected nominations for Evan Rachel Wood and Aaron Paul. *Shrug*

You haven't included Guest Actor/Actress so I missed that Laverne Cox was nominated as a Guest in OitNB (holy hell, that was this Emmy cycle? Feels like forever ago that the show finished with its resounding fart sound). This is kind of hilarious, not because she was bad or anything, but because she had about 2 minutes of screen time (so, you know, about the same as they gave her post season...4 I think?) I only clocked this because someone shared the weird video of when Leslie Jones announced her nomination. I don't know if Laverne was just surprised herself or if it was technical difficulties but it was a pretty bizarre interaction! Have a watch if you haven't seen it already.

Comedy, haven't got much to say, except I would have liked to see Sex Education get a nomination, love that show so much.

Drama actors/actresses, as mentioned above for ERW and Aaron Paul. Glad Helena Bonham Carter got a supporting actress nomination, I thought she did a great job on the Crown. I'm also happy with the Killing Eve acting nominations, my complaints with the season had nothing to do with the acting. I especially liked Fiona Shaw this season, which leaves me torn over who I want to win that category. Ugh, looking again you also have Laura Dern and Meryl Streep. Again, I have no complaints there, the problems with S2 were not the acting. So the only two I'm not rooting for are Ozark and the Handmaid's Tale - purely because I haven't seen them.

Honestly, I look at these nominations and the more I watch them, the more WTF feeling it is. There were times when I knew all the nominees and the shows. This year I feel like I am looking at "Best ornithology seminar in Southern Brazil" award.

Drama category was a bit more traditional, although for the love of me, I don't understand how voters can ignore The Good Fight and its amazing cast. At least three of the nominated shows - The Handmaid's Tale, Stranger Things and Killing Eve were mediocre at best, with The Crown being adequate (I mean, great TV but nothing new). I am happy about The Mandalorian. Luckily, the genre TV is not dead.

I haven't seen Pose, Succession or The Morning Show so I am out of water with the acting nominees. Honest to God, I don't understand how Nicole Kidman was not nominated for Big Little Lies

I can't even begin to discuss comedy categories as I know only about The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. I have literally never heard of some of those shows.

I was better acquainted with Limited Series. In terms of Mrs America vs Watchmen, I would go Watchmen over Mrs America, but undoubtedly Blanchett over King. I am not sure baout Blanchett winning this, but I swear, she was in league of her own this year. The ending alone is not Emmy, but Oscar worthy performance. I have no idea what happened to Rose Byrne and Sarah Paulson as they would have been my picks instead of Aduba and Martindale for Mrs America.

All in all, it's a complete mess.

I haven't seen most of the nominees but I really liked both The Good Place and What We Do In The Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows is the funniest show going right now, imo. Doubt it has much of a chance to win though.

I was initially a bit nervous that it wouldn't live up to the movie, especially when it seemed like it might effectively be a remake (except in Staten Island rather than New Zealand) but I think they have expanded the premise with things like Colin Robinson. I think it might also be better suited to the TV sitcom format rather than a film, although the film is still great.

Rhea Seehorn not being nominated for Better Call Saul is an absolute travesty.

Right?  I thought she would have a good chance to win with the powerhouse Kim centric past season, especially with so many critics praising her to the sky, instead, totally overlooked.  Not like I watch the Emmys anymore, but still.

Thanks for recommendation. I will try to see if I can get it via my cable network. This year is very weird for me... I feel like I know nothing :D

That said, it can be refreshing not knowing who'll win.

I have only seen a few clips here and there (mostly because im not much into any TV right now) but what i’ve seen is hilarious and very promising. And it has Tilda Swinton?! Yay!

This year is yet another one of those that proves that a good chunk of the voters, if not most, doesn't actually watch the shows. For example, no one that actually watches Better Call Saul would only nominate Giancarlo Esposito this year, considering he didn't had all that much to do, leaving Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn and Tony Dalton out. On the other hand, someone that watched Breaking Bad, but isn't really following BCS all that closely or at all could.

I think it might all still be available on the BBC iPlayer (it was recently) if you want to watch it.

Yeah it's still there (I think they keep them for 6 months). Hoping to get around to it, I'm just not feeling much for TV at the moment. Looked like a very star studded cast from what I did see

The regular cast isn't particularly starry, I think Matt Berry was the only one I was familiar with beforehand, although they are all good. They do have a lot of recognisable guest starts, I guess Taiki Waititi probably knows a lot of people in Hollywood now.

  • 1 month later...

Excellent results for SuccessionWatchmen and The Mandalorian, but Schitt's Creek clean-sweeping the board and winning every single comedy award, setting a new record and matching several others, was highly impressive and well-deserved.

I felt bad for The Good Place not getting something in its final year of eligibility, but the last season was probably the weakest. The show was definitely robbed in previous years.
