Why is there a problem with the prospect of a museum?

There's no problem with the idea of a museum, but as people have noted, this group raising money is not intending to turn the house into a museum and does not intend to have it open to the public. But people believe otherwise.

I won't be donating. The project doesn't appear to have any real interest in advancing Tolkien literary appreciation and the 'connection' just looks to be a front for them to raise funds.  That and the 'Smaug's Lair' in the garden or whatever makes it sound like a cheap and lame theme park.

I've seen the reality of the project being pointed out to people around the web and it doesn't seem to deter support for it at all. Most still seem to endorse it. Which is... odd.

Tolkien's Father Christmas letters in a new edition.

....Tolkien aficionados will relish glimpses of the author’s hallmarks — not just those goblins but Tolkien’s love of what W.H. Auden termed “northernness”; an elf scribe named Ilbereth; invented languages and alphabets. Still, the greatest pleasure here comes from sharing in Tolkien’s love for and delight in his family at Christmastime. Parents may sigh with recognition as they read Father Christmas’s final letter, to Priscilla, at 14.  -- Elizabeth Hand

Popping here to ask a question: is there a correlation between the mythos of the knightly hero, like St George, killing a dragon, and that all the named dragons in Tolkien's writings were killed by Men (and not Elves, Dwarves, Maiar, etc)? Sure Eärendil was half-elf, but Ancalagon was OP, and took a magic ship and an army of eagles to take him dowm.

Tolkien's source material was Fafnir and the Beowulf dragon, slain by Sigurd and Beowulf/Wiglaf respectively. Isolated heroes is where it's at.

The biggest point of interest there is the demolition job on Humphrey Carpenter (and really raises so many questions about the Letters).

I actually disagree with her conclusion that Rider Haggard does not influence Tolkien at the plot level. The Mirror of Galadriel and the Bridge of Khazad-dum are both clearly influenced by She, quite apart from Tolkien originally naming the city of Tirion as Kor.

Yeah, Carpenter does not come out of it looking good. I had never heard that Christopher was enraged by the first draft, or that Carpenter had said he wanted to portray Tolkien as a slapstick fuddy duddy. Really gives you a lot to think about.
