Watch, Watched, Watching: I missed the last thread?

Saw The History Boys. Quite a strange experience, it is a little British film from 2006 written by Allan Benet and based on a play of the same name. It tells the tale of a group of boys in the final stages of their grammar school education preparing to try out for places at Oxford.

As you can imagine, it is packed too the rafters with excellent British thespians. A few Harry Potter alumni like Richard Griffits and Frances de la Tour, but the real treat are the boys in this play. It's crazy to see all these very well known actors in their younger years (James Cordon and Dominic Cooper are the most well known of the bunch, but if you watch a lot of British tv you'll also recognize the others). Strangely enough some of them also reminded me of other actors (there is one actor who looks a lot like Dufresne from Black Sails and another character who could pass as a younger version of Kai Proctor from Banshee), but I digress.

It's the type of plot they don't make anymore. Elegiac is the word that I would use to describe it. It seems to long for a world that has passed away, namely the youth of these young men and the system that molded them into candidates worthy of one of the old colleges (and the old colleges themselves are glorified as well of course). They don't make films like this anymore.

So if anyone is interested in a throwback to simpler times and wants to see a film without gimmicks. A film that is just driven by an excellent cast and a love of poetry and prose, this might be one for you.

I don't mind three hour movies at all.  Just giving Casino shit because those three hours are paced to feel even longer imho.  It's sooooo drawn out.  I still like the movie, but it's one of my least favorite Scorsese flicks.

Shame. I love Casino, in fact, I like it more than Goodfellas, a lot more.  I didn't even remember it was that long, because it flies by for me.

I dunno, I've only seen it a few times, and I remember especially the last two times I had a hard time getting through it.  Pretty sure a turned it off.  But that was probably over a decade ago - like Fez maybe I should give it another try.  The other thing I really didn't like was Sharon Stone's character.  I don't think it was as much her acting as just the character and the time devoted to her just doesn't do anything for me.

It takes all kinds.  The Sharon Stone character was one of my favorite things about the movie, the clothes, the drug spiral....I thought that storyline livened the movie up quite a bit.

I thought it was going through the motions of a story that's been depicted dozens (hundreds?) of times on film.  I know she based on a real person, but I thought Scorsese could have provided more depth and nuance to her character and downfall.

That's why we call them archetypes, no?  I do agree a little more insight into why her character was unable to keep it together would have been a positive.  I also loved the comic moments that were spliced throughout the movie.  Casino is probably top 5 Scorsese for me.

I haven't seen Casino yet but this is good to hear coz Goodfellas is rubbish.

I am aware that this is not the most widely held opinion.

These are truly fighting words.

(I'm not sure if Casino will be your thing, then. Goodfellas is the better film by most accounts, and Casino has some overlapping themes, but the former did them better)

This is crazier than those Varys is a merman, Sam is Rhaegar’s son type threads...

Goodfellas is full of iconic camera work (Copa steadicam shot ), has a fantastic cast with an amazing performance by Pesci, is probably the most realistic depiction of the mafia in film history, literally one great scene after another...funny how, fuck you pay me, the Layla montage, go home and get your shine box...

Heat is a classic as well. You can’t talk about great heist movies without including it.

We're almost finished with season 2 of Yellowstone. This show is straight up bonkers. I'm also falling in love with Kelsey Asbille. I'm glad she's in the new season of Fargo.

That’s certainly understandable. I didn’t realize she’s in the new season of Fargo. I think the only other thing I’ve seen her in is Wind River

But speaking of Yellowstone, S3 has been pretty great. I’ve always liked the acting and locations, but this is the first season the writing really reminds of the quality of Taylor Sheridan’s movies. A definite step up in that department, imo.

The play was VERY popular here (as was the film). Bit of a shame about James Cordon being in it but I suppose that then he was a little way off his current level of awfulness. I saw Jamie Parker play Prince Hal/Henry at the Globe a few times (Henry IV I & II and Henry V) and he was brilliant in that - although massively upstaged by Roger Allam (but then who isn't?).

It's been a while but isn't it because James Woods' character manipulated her, got her hooked on drugs and pimped her out at a really young age?

That's how I remember it.  Which again, it incredibly cliched and why the storyline didn't do anything for me.
