I watched Jumanji : The Next Level which was as enjoyably daft as the previous film. The Rock playing a character who is basically Danny DeVito in the body of The Rock was particularly amusing.

It is a film that I think anyone has ever worked in an office will relate to.

Finished the first season of Killing Eve. I really liked the first half of it, but I thought the back half wasn't actually that good. Too many interesting characters killed off or disappeared from the narrative; an over-arching plot that didn't make much sense; and Eve became insufferable as a character really quickly.

I watched Birds of Prey last night. It was alright.

I came away pretty disappointed.  As a Harley Quinn movie, it was OK.  As a Birds of Prey movie, meh.

I'd totally watch this Black Canary and Huntress, my feelings are mixed on Montoya.   Complete waste of Black Mask, Zsaz and Cassandra Cain from a source material perspective.

I forgot how cold-blooded Marlo got after killing Prop Joe. Basically yeah I killed him, the connect is now mine, the price has raised and fuck these dumb meetings. Punked the entire room and left.

Although it's not like this is a smart move.  The seeds of Marlo's downfall (assuming that he had somehow avoided the law) were already planted, and this is one of the key factors.  Treating people with less power than you as if they have no power at all is almost always a mistake.

Joe tried to warn him.

I watched Midsommar a couple days ago. It didn't make that much of an impact when I had finished, other than I thought it was a good update on The Wicker Man. The start was depressing as fuck, and I didn't warm to any of the main characters. The horror scenes and the situations leading up to them therefore came as great relief. I'm sure if I'd seen this in a receptive cinema that laughter would have ensued. Bordered on hilarious at times.

But now I'm mulling over anything I might have missed.

Spoiler

Did Pelle and his commune identify Dani as their May Queen and then orchestrated the deaths of her sister and parents so she could be drawn to Sweden? Seems a far stretch, but if so then the commune is not beyond psychotic acts to assure a favourable outcome for their ritual. If not, and its a catharsis of sorts for Dani's arc, facilitated through a happenstance encounter with a folk commune

, then shiiiit this is a wacky far out movie.

Definitely the latter.

Let us know when you finish sometime next week.

Weren’t you saying you are a big fan of Gangs of New York? Casino is only 8 minutes longer...

And Casino doesn’t actually feel long to me tbh. Neither did The Irishman. Both have great editing, imo. The Scorsese film that I actually felt the run time the most with (other than Gangs) is Silence. It probably didn’t help that I saw it at an arthouse theater that doesn’t have the most comfortable seats in the world though.

I don't mind three hour movies at all.  Just giving Casino shit because those three hours are paced to feel even longer imho.  It's sooooo drawn out.  I still like the movie, but it's one of my least favorite Scorsese flicks.

I admittedly have never really given Casino a fair shot. It was just one too many De Niro movies where he's in the mob; and on the Scorsese side it just felt unnecessary after Goodfellas. I haven't seen it in ages either, I should probably watch it again some day and see if my opinion improves.

Casino and Gangs of New York were long, but the pacing works, at least for me. I've still yet to finish The Irishman though. It really feels like Scorsese should have joined the modern age and made this into a miniseries.

Just out of curiosity, would you agree with @Fez that some of what hurts Casino's rankings in the all-time great mob movies list is its redundancy? It's like the Charles Barkley of the genre.

(Also, how are you not running around the NBA thread after today's hilariousness with your Magic winning?)

Nah, a film was the way to go. They would have never convinced Pesci to do a series. And he was by far the best part.

Yes.

It's just one game.  If they go up 2-0 or 3-1, I'll start getting excited, but I really doubt that's gonna happen.  Caught the end of the 1st half and then the 3rd quarter, the Bucks just lacked energy.  I'm sure they'll fix that.

I've tried to watch it twice and it just felt boring an hour in or so both times.

*Well, you millennials have no attention span. :P

I’ve watched it twice, and I absolutely love it. Great pacing for 3.5 hours, imo. And the second half (particularly the last 3rd) is the best part.

*I’m technically one also
