UK Politics: Johnsons Hoaxy Yurt North of Hadrian's Wall

Really good speech from Starmer today. He really does seem to have clocked on to what went wrong for Labour at the last election, not only admitting that they deserved to lose, but also showing signs that he understands far better where to position the party. He’s clearly economically to the left but also talks about family and the nation, is not ashamed of being proud of his country. That will sit far better than many on the lefts standard hatred of Britain that keeps them out of power.

He also laid into Johnson on Covid that was rather good. Cleverly also brushing over Brexit.

I just watched some of BoJo’s speech in the Commons.

Who's going to tell him it’s not enough? Who in their right mind is going to pubs? Does Covid-19 not spread before 10:00 pm in the UK?

Those who are So over Covid, and those unfortunate people who have to work in them.  Its a well established fact that Covid does not spread if you are spending money.

Might not be in the news much but lack of PPE still a problem in hospitals.
The guidance on scrubs caps changed from being replaced at end of day to being changed every operation. Thry then ran out, so some of my wofe’s colleagues have been using same hat for 3 or 4 weeks.

The theatre masks expired 5 years ago...

What exactly do you want him to do?

Very curious.

Shut the fucking pubs?

And your solution for the thousands of people who work in the hospitality sector?

I do agree that pubs should probably have been the last place to open. But it's farrr easier to just say close everything than it is to actually offer solutions that will stop thousands of lives and businesses being ruined.

I was being a bit flip there, but reading these threads has provided a seemingly endless list of things that could be done to improve things.

How about making it clear what the mask policy is and actually enforcing it?

How about making sure communication channels are clear between levels of government? So that people actually know where cases are happening? Do you think people are confident that those channels are open now, or are there communities that may still not know outbreaks are going on because the information hasn’t been provided to them?

How about a clear set of guidelines?

How about getting the PPE people are crying for to them?

How about finding someone competent enough to get these things done?

I could go through this pages and just pluck out the complaints, but I‘m sure you’ve read them.

And what about the pub owners? How about getting the funding to them to make sure people survive? Or do you think you’re going to get herd immunity without consequences that are worse?

Thank you :)

All very sensible things but I feel like the horse has bolted on half of it.

Oh I think the economic fallout and the mental health issues that are arising from that are far worse than the virus itself but I know that's not a shared opinion here so I tend to keep it to myself. I think people(I definitely fit into this) find it hard to relate to something that they haven't seen any direct effects from aka the virus itself. So these are the people who are still going to the pubs.

An awful lot of the problems you're having is the government over there- and it won't be just ours - is unwilling to introduce support that can persuade the voting public that much more socialist, government-help led policies might work long term.

The fact that in the very long run those will become probably necessary, not in the hospitality sector as now but in jobs that will eventually be replaced by automation, is something everyone in power now is keen to fob off onto the next person, hence part of the reason for this mess. They all shat themselves when they had to introduce something that looked very like Universal Basic Income in several countries temporarily.

Another part of the reason is just that they're all morons, of course.
