Football: Still in December

It’s pretty incredible that Liverpool won that so comfortably with 60%* of the first choice outfield unavailable.  Plus another injury during the game and having to to dip into a very weak bench — because all of the usual bench were already on the field.

*VVD, Gomez, Trent, Salah, Thiago, Henderson.  And four of them are arguably the best in the world in their position.

Keita’s new injury is especially frustrating because his international manager played him for two full length appearances during the week, even though he hadn’t played for five weeks before that.  Definitely not the first time that manager has overworked Keita as he was returning from injury, and it’s a big part of why he can’t stay reliably fit.  Whenever he has a muscle strain, the next international break has only been a few weeks away and he’ll get over-played then again.

But huge kudos to the team for digging deep like that, as despicable as it is that they need to keep playing at the brink of exhaustion like this.  Nice to see Firmino looking a bit sharper too.

It's a mark of the problem with Arsenal's approach that until today, and perhaps after today still but not sure, Harry Maguire had had more shots this season than Aubameyang.

Slightly less incredible when you factor that Leicester were also missing their best CB, both of their first-choice fullbacks, and their key defensive midfielder.

Just watched the CL training session. No Trent, Hendo, Thiago, Firmino

And Atalanta rested most of their first team at the weekend.  They’re on a bit of a slump since we thrashed them, but they must be prioritizing rescuing their CL campaign.

Bruno is class. It was also a good move to play Cavani at #9 - he does make those CF runs, unlike Martial, and provides an aerial threat as well which can make use of Telles' crosses. We have been sloppy in defence though - Istanbul Basaksehir haven't really managed to create anything themselves but rather the openings they've had have been a result of unforced errors on our part.

ETA. pretty selfish on Rashford's part there denying Bruno his opportunity for a hattrick.
