I know we used to have a thread where we talked non-Nobel lit prizes, but I can’t find it anymore. Anyway, yesterday the National Book Award winners were announced, and today the Booker Prize, so I thought I’d start a new thread.

Charles Wu’s Interior Chinatown won the National Book Award in fiction. The other shortlisted books were: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw, A Children’s Bible by Lydia Millet, and Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam.

The National Book Award Translated Literature Prize went to Tokyo Ueno Station (Japanese) by Miri Yu. The other shortlisted books were: High as the Waters Rise (German) by Anja Kampmann, The Family Clause (Swedish) by Jonas Hassen Khemiri, The Bitch (Spanish) by Pilar Quintana, and Minor Detail (Arabic) by Adania Shibli.

Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain may have missed out on the National Book Award, but it took home the bigger prize in winning the Booker. The rest of the shortlist was: Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi, The New Wilderness by Diane Cook, This Mournable Body by Tsitsi Dangarembga, Real Life by Brandon Taylor, and The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste.

Some other big prizes from earlier this year:

Booker International - Winner: The Discomfort of Evening (Dutch) by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld. Shortlist: The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree (Farsi) by Shokoofeh Azar, Hurricane Season (Spanish) by Fernanda Melchor, The Adventures of China Iron (Spanish) by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Tyll (German) by Daniel Kehlmann, and The Memory Police (Japanese) by Yoko Ogawa.

International Dublin Literary Award - Winner: Milkman (English) by Anna Burns. This also won the 2018 Booker Prize, and is, in my opinion, the best book of at least the last decade. Shortlist: The Silence of Girls (English) by Pat Barker, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (Polish) by Olga Tokarczuk, An American Marriage (English) by Tayari Jones, Disoriental (French) by Negar Djavadi, Washington Black (English) by Esi Edugyan, History of Violence (French) by Édouard Louis, The Friend (English) by Sigrid Nunez, There There (English) By Tommy Orange, and All the Lives We Never Lived  (English) by Anuradha Roy.

National Book Critics Circle Award - Winner: Everything Inside by Edwidge Danticat. Shortlist: Feast Your Eyes by Myla Goldberg, The Topeka School by Ben Lerner, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, and Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli.

PEN/Faulkner Award - Winner: Sea Monsters by Chloe Aridjis. Shortlist: Where Reason Ends by Yiyun Li, The Night Swimmers by Peter Rock, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong, and We Cast a Shadow by Maurice Carlos Ruffin.

Pulitzer Prize - Winner: The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. Shortlist: The Topeka School by Ben Lerner and The Dutch House by Ann Patchett.

James Tait Black Memorial Prize - Winner: Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellman. Shortlist: Travellers by Helen Habila, Sudden Traveller by Sarah Hall, and Girl by Edna O’Brien.

Giller Prize - Winner: How to Pronounce Knife by Souvankham Thammavongsa. Shortlist: Ridgerunner by Gil Adamson, Here the Dark by David Bergen, Polar Vortex by Shani Mootoo, The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel.

Women’s Prize for Fiction (previously Orange Prize and Bailey’s Prize) - Winner: Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. Shortlist: Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, Dominicana by Angie Cruz, Weather by Jenny Offill, The Mirror and the Light by Hillary Mantel, and A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes.

Women’s Prize for Fiction 25th Anniversary “Winner of Winners” - Winner: Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Shortlist: All previous winners.

While I really like this award, it has never done a very good job of showcasing books in translation; 16 of the 25 winners have been English language novels. And this year is no different, with 5 of the 6 shortlisted works having been originally written in English.
