The Dublin Literary Award shortlist has been announced:

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli

Apeirogon by Colum McCann

Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

While I really like this award, it has never done a very good job of showcasing books in translation; 16 of the 25 winners have been English language novels. And this year is no different, with 5 of the 6 shortlisted works having been originally written in English.

The winner is Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli.

A bit surprised by this one. My money was on Girl, Woman, Other or The Nickel Boys, with On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous as a possible spoiler.

Missed these two earlier in the year:

PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel:

Winner: Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn

Shortlist: These Ghosts are Family by Maisy Card, Luster by Raven Leilani, Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, and How Much of These Hills is Gold by C Pam Zhang

Well the Pulitzer Prize will be announced on the 11th, and since they don’t put out a shortlist prior to the award announcement, I thought it might be a good time for a little speculation. Below is an in-no-way complete list of eligible books I think will get consideration:

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

Homeland Elegies by Ayad Akhtar

Deacon King Kong by James McBride

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu

Luster by Raven Leilani

A Children’s Bible by Lidia Millet

The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich

Real Life by Brandon Taylor

Memorial Bryan Washington

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw

The Pulitzer fiction guidelines famously state “For distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life”, which means that Booker winner Shuggie Bain, which is set in Scotland, is going to have an uphill battle to win the Pulitzer. Though it’s not impossible (see The Good Earth or The Orphan Master’s Son).

Anyway, my predictions for the shortlist are: Interior Chinatown, Deacon King Kong, and The Night Watchman.

Of those three, I’ve only read Interior Chinatown, which is an amazing novel and would be a hugely deserving winner. But my prediction for the winner is:

Deacon King Kong

And the Pulitzer winner is: The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich.

Shortlist: A Registry of My Passage Upon the Earth by Daniel Mason, and Telephone by Percival Everett.

I’m stoked to see Erdrich finally win a Pulitzer, but the two shortlisted titles came completely out of left field for me.

Oh shit, totally forgot to post this too. To be clear, this is the Booker International prize, for works translated into English, and the winner is At Night All Blood is Black (Senegal/France) by David Diop. I’ve been really looking forward to this book, as Chigozie Obioma has been talking it up for months.

The big surprise here is Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun missing the cut.

Myshkin, I don't know if anyone else feels this way but thanks for posting Lit awards. I do enjoy seeing what is  out there to read and enjoy even if I don't have the time to actually read all these books.
