Stark lax security

The stark family and their advisors seen to have no worries about their security/safety since they dont even have special guards assigned just for their lord stark and his wife and their children unlike other houses like Martells and Tyrrell who have Areo Hotah or Erryk and Arryk specially after Bran fall and during the war of five kings when they should have assigned 2+ guards for every child and during the war of five kings they sent most of the garrison to support the vassal against ironborn instead of keeping then in the castle and increasing their numbers to wartime garrison plus replacing the men lost in kings landing and with Robb in riverlands

Robb had thirty bodyguards, and he always assigned at least ten guards when she’s on the edge of the Whispering Wood or travelling to meet Renly. Plus Bran got Hodor, who’s not a warrior, but he’s still one of the biggest people in the story.
The Starks just got comfortable. Winterfell is the heart of the North, and they haven’t dealt with a rebellion amongst their bannermen for centuries. It made sense to heavily guard themselves when they went south, but in the North, they felt untouchable.

Ned had Jorry.  Winterfell is in the boonies.  Why would anyone go there to just harm a Stark?  Nobody would under normal circumstances.  The assassin for Bran was an unusual thing to have happened.  The Starks are not a rich clan.  Stationing household guards is taking people away from the crop fields.  It's bad when your climate doesn't allow for long growing seasons.

I feel really bad for Ned Stark.  I guess the Lord didn't show mercy on the boy from the boondocks!!!!!!!   :P:D

Areo Hotah is the captain of Doran's House hold Guard. Ned's captain is Jory. The Starks have their own Hotah.

Robb has 30 warriors guarding him.  When he sends his Cat off to see Renly she is sent with her own guards.

Well they did have guards, just not very good ones. The men Ned brought to King’s Landing were slaughtered to a man in the two engagements they showed up in and Rodrik Cassel and Cley Cerwyn’s force was massacred by Ramsay Snow.

The Northmen are strangely lopsided in their battle records. They’re either massacred or nigh invincible, sometimes a mix of both (the Winter Wolves being the best example of that rare third category).

To be fair, both KL engagements were impossible for the northerners. They were gravely outmanned in both, and in one caught completely unaware.

Yeah, it is hardly a fair judgement. Ned was hardly expecting his guard needing him to defend him from Robert's own resources.

Jory beats a couple of people in the Hand of the Tourney before going three round with Lothar Brune, one of the deadliest warriors in the series.

Jory, one on one, may be as deadly as Areo Hotah. He's just not as cool as he's a regular Northmen while Hotah is a foreigner with a fancy weapon.

Eddard had no clue how powerful the Lannisters had become.  He never imagined the Lannisters will have the audacity to attack the King's Hand in the kingdom's capital.  But let's be real.  Ned could hire 30 guards and the Lannisters would hire 50.  The Starks should have never left the north is the bottom line.

Jory didn’t last very long against Jaime Lannister.

Ned shouldnt have sent his men with dondarrion. He fucked himself when sent that many of his own guards. He couldve just asked dondarrion to gather men from kings landing and the crownlands. Many eager knights and man at arms would’ve joined him. You have thousands of knights that wish to earn their spurs, a chance to fight under the kings banner is a dream come true for many young ones that haven’t been bloodied.

I think his point is that it would not have made a difference if Ned did not send off 20 of his men, he'd still have been outnumbered. He was never going to outmatch the Queen's forces.

But yeah, I agree with your point about Ned sending off his own men, it was a pointless risk to his own security.

I’ve always maintained that one-on-one the Northmen are no more than average quality warriors. Their effectiveness in war comes from their relative hardiness in enduring harsh conditions, being able to do forced marches and live on poor rations better than comparative southron armies.

That’s where most of Robb’s advantage came from. Not from having warriors that are superior in individual combat skills. If anything, they spend LESS time participating on tourneys etc.

But as a versatile, adaptable fighting force they seem to be very effective collectively, from a contemporary and historical perspective.
