Rodrik cassel incompetent

Is Rodrik cassel the castellan of Winterfell and also master at arms a idiot or just incompetent or just too proud to consider that Winterfell could be taken regardless of numbers guarding it?

He never says anything about Robb to taking the remaining trained guards on his march south leaving winterfell badly garrisoned with green guards and not even up to strenght for war time which should be 500 since Ned Stark said that 500 men could hold Winterfell against 10000 and it's actual garrison seem not not even half something that not professional Castilian ,master at arms and professional soldiers should ever do specially for a castle of a lord paramount

To help defend against iron born attacks on Stark vassals Cassel by order of Bran Stark Cassel  takes without questioning or sugesting keeping most if not all of the remaining Winterfell garrison to defend the castle and  instead take along most of the garrison with most of the surrounding area remaining manpower leaving Winterfell with barely any guards to guard the remaining Starks and their castle something that should have been his first priority before even helping repeal a iron born attack on its lord vassals

When he sieging Winterfell and the Bolton troops arrive,he never suspects then even after having clashed with them over hornwood because of Ramsay assuming that they are friendly just because he killed Ramsay without considering that they may want to avenge Ramsay or have other plans specially consudeting the size of the Bolton men almost 600 men and mostly calvary

Thing is, Westeros is relatively peaceful (though wars, when they do come, are massive) and North had not been invaded in the living memory. Also, to attack Winterfell in a deep strike like that, you really need to be a special sort of an idiot. So while I agree that he was irresponsible, it is not as bad as it might seem initially.

Theon was that and more!

The taking of Winterfell by Theon is still one of the hardest things I can believe in the series and it's mostly because we're suppose to believe it involved strategy and not magic.

Drogo and Dany. The physics of their getting physical blew my mind

He was left in a sorry position, to protect the North in Robb's and the majority of the Northern's armies absence. That means at times he has to leave Winterfell vulnerable, such as when he went to Hornwood or when he went to Torrhenns Square, to keep the North safe.

Allowing Northern castles to fall one by one and to do nothing is not an option. It actually endangers Robb as those men from those lands are likely to abandon him, or worse turn on him as they see the cost of his war.

On top of that it coming to the end of a long summer, most people in the North are aware they are in for a long brutal winter. The North holds the majority of its Winter supplies in their castles granaries. The North can not afford to allow their castles to fall, the effects of losing those grains will be devastating to the North.

So Rodrik has to act.  Robb and his Lords are not going to be happy that he simply allowed their castles to fall without doing anything.

Robb himself stripped Wintefell of its Garrison. That is not on Rodrik, Rodrik was not even in the North when Robb and Theon made that decison.

When the distant cheers had faded to silence and the yard was empty at last, Winterfell seemed deserted and dead. Bran looked around at the faces of those who remained, women and children and old men … and Hodor. The huge stableboy had a lost and frightened look to his face. "Hodor?" he said sadly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Yet given time … Ser Rodrik has the truth of it, we need men to walk the walls. Your lord father took the cream of his guard to King's Landing, and your brother took the rest, along with all the likely lads for leagues around. Many will not come back to us, and we must needs find the men to take their places."
Bran stared resentfully at the sweating boys below. "If I still had my legs, I could beat them all."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The oldest were men grown, seventeen and eighteen years from the day of their naming. One was past twenty. Most were younger, sixteen or less.
Bran watched them from the balcony of Maester Luwin's turret, listening to them grunt and strain and curse as they swung their staves and wooden swords. The yard was alive to the clack of wood on wood, punctuated all too often by thwacks and yowls of pain when a blow struck leather or flesh. Ser Rodrik strode among the boys, face reddening beneath his white whiskers, muttering at them one and all. Bran had never seen the old knight look so fierce. "No," he kept saying. "No. No. No."

Robb and Ned stripped Winterfell of its defences. Robb actually left Luwin in charge, it was only his mother's arrival and common sense that sent Rodrik back to Winterfell. Without Rodik there the North would be even more vulnerable.

Robb clearly dropped the ball. Left Rodrik with an impossible job.
