Hi all,  How are you all doing?

<long post>

Pebble, hi!

I do hope it is not the really really bad news because many people will end up unemployed then ... keep us updated. :)

Yay for brother's job! Is this brother a lot younger than you? What did he do until now, did he ever have any job?

On my end, I have next week off work and am really happy about it. I considered going to parents' place today evening, after cleaning up here and packing, but now I am in my flat and don't feel like going anywhere at all - I am happy to have this place! Maybe I will just ve lazy today and enjoy the thought of the free week. My parents and I end up annoying each other pretty quickly now too, and our communication is a bit strained, so there is no rush to spend as much time as possible with them at all.

It’s my day off but I’m not feeling great so I’m just watching tv from the couch all day. Typical. Boohoo.

Such days must be too. Is it a holiday in your country?

I was actually somewhat productive today and wrote a few pages and edited a bit for my dissertation. I wish I had longer to do that.

Nope, I just had a dentist appointment and for some reason it had made sense to take the day off back when I booked it.

that’s great! to you and the dissertation!

I hope all is well with your teeth. I am currently terrified of all the teeth-related appointments, as it has been told to me that I will have to have my wisdom teeth removed and I definitely don't want that ... I heard it is really painful.

Thanks ... I fear I won't have time enough to concentrate on it enough. I really like doing it when I concentrate on it enough, but one week off knowing you still have to do work even if officially on holiday to be ready next week is just very little when you have a dissertation to write and also want to socialise with friends in this limited time.

No actual issue or toothache, just changing old cavity fillers and getting a new cavity filled. Sorry about the wisdom teeth :( I’m sure it’s unpleasant to get them out but perhaps less so than the complications leaving them in could cause?

Yes, having to cram everything into the very limited amount of time off really sucks :/ the  time management challenge is the bane of our existence, isn’t it? :/  well good luck and do take time to socialize and recharge, that’s important and the purpose of time off. Any fun plans lined up?

It wasn't all that bad for me. I had the top ones out with just sedation and local anaesthetic, and the bottom ones a few years later under general anaesthetic. The latter wasn't exactly trivial, but I got to go home a few hours afterwards. Obviously I didn't experience any pain during, and the recovery period was no big deal. I guess there may be variations in how different dentists handle the procedure and how different people respond, but it's not necessarily something you need to be afraid of.

Ok I owe you guys an update on the work situation.

well we finally had the announement.  to be honest I think I'd preferer the news of plant closure (at least I'd get a nice payout)

Dagenham Engine Plant

Equipment Re-Use Plan – Supporting E-Drive Localisation

On Monday 18th October, the Company formally announced that the sourcing decision for the first E-Drive localization program in Europe had been made, and that Halewood had been awarded the program. This is positive news for Halewood and demonstrates the Company’s commitment to investing in manufacturing in the UK. The Company has reviewed its volume assumptions for the business plan period throughout its European Powertrain Plants and has identified an opportunity to reuse some of its assets, to reduce the overall investment costs of the program in support of its launch. The most suitable assets that are available and that can be redeployed to support the E-Drive program are within Panther Machining Phase 2. The Company believes that through consolidating some of the Panther Machining activities in Panther Phase 2 (Block Mod C & Head Mod B) into Phase 1 and changing the shift pattern to 144, the area will be able to continue to meet its production commitments efficiently and within cost and support the redeployment of assets to Halewood.

Over the coming weeks we will begin to consult with our Trade Union partners on this change, including the commencement of the asset removal process and the introduction of the 144 shift pattern in the area and will notify you of any changes at the earliest opportunity.

I recognise that in 2021 there have been some difficult messages we have had to convey related to volume predominantly owing to changes in the external environment and the move away from ICE engines to electrification. However, the Company continues to view the Panther engine as critical to the success of its commercial vehicle business in Europe and the Plant is held in high regard. With this plan, the Plant is able to support the launch of the E-Drive programme in Europe as well as support ongoing demand for Panther. We will continue to work with our Trade Union partners to keep you informed of any changes in volume and explore alternative business opportunities.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Dagenham Engine Plant.

What this means as a plant is we are loosing some of our machines and and loosing some capacity to make more engines if demand (and at the moment supply of silicon chips and other parts goes up).  To keep up with current demand  the people doing 3 shift 5 days a week (8hr shifts)  will be moved to 144 shift   which is working 4 shifts of 12 hours every 7 days   (days and nights).

This also means Dagenham is loosing investment that was going to keep dagenham open for a few more years.  the other 2 engines we make are really low volume and dropping.  and once 2030 rolls around the UK can't sell any new deisel so we will have to stop making before then (I'm sure the rest of Europe has similar dates bans)  the long term plan of the company is to make old stuff in Dagenham for as long as it can while it gives new technology to other countries and plant giving them a future, but not us.    At max this means the life for Dagenham is 10 years.  and its probably reduced that by 5.  (not enough to work for my timings but that was not expected anyway)

What this means for me personally as I work in IT can cover all production in the plant I may be required to also work the 144 shift pattern  If this happens I believe I will end up quitting my job within a couple of weeks.  12 hour days are bad enough, 12 hour nights are dangerous.  It means I will be working 48 hrs a week instead of 40  and not always having weekends off.

shift pattern below.

Saturday - 1
Sunday -
Monday Earlies
Tuesday Earlies
Wednesday Earlies
Thursday Earlies
Friday -
Saturday - 2
Sunday Nights
Monday Nights
Tuesday Nights
Wednesday -
Thursday -
Friday Earlies
Saturday Earlies 3
Sunday -
Monday -
Tuesday -
Wednesday Nights
Thursday Nights
Friday Nights

There is a slim chance I may get the option of changing job within the company but there is not that many jobs available that won't be going 144.  There is also a chance that my department will be able to refuse going 144 at least for a while.  and if I can get that timeline stretched to 2 years an 9 months from today what happens after really doesn't effect me.   This won't happen till the new year anyway and maybe not till Easter.  What might save me is massive supply problems and people switching from deasil cars/vans.  - If the electric transit van takes off in a big way that is the end of Dagenham.

The idiotic thing is, my dentist didn't even explain to me what complications there could be otherwise. So for now I just don't know why this should be done at all. I will clear that up the next time I see her.

Meeting the gentleman a lot is the most important! ;)

I also want to visit some relatives that I haven't seen in ages.

I have heard really different stories about it. Some say it is extremely painful, some say it's not that bad. It is still not something I would neccessarily want to go through voluntarily. I am very squeamish about these things.

Urgh, that's awful. Any chance of a strike over it?

Aaaaanyway, I wanted to ask a thing ... is there going to be a board-wide Secret Santa this year? @Lany Freelove Cassandra? @Pebble thats Stubby? @rocksniffer? @felice? @HelenaExMachina? Whoever else used to take part in that?

Since I finally, finally have some disposable income and my own address now, I might actually decide to pariticipate this year  ...

I haven't done it before either. But given the issues with international postage at the moment, you might be pushing your luck to get people signed up, assigned giftees, acquiring and sending gifts, and have them arrive in time for Christmas... :(

Ah, sorry! I thought you used to be involved with it. I know Lany used to organise it.

No idea when they usually started to sign up and what the deadlines were.

https://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?/topic/152566-secret-santa-xiii-unlucky-for-some-but-not-for-us/ <- This is the last thread I can find. I know it used to be a bigger thing back when Lany used to organise it. It looks like the game has been mostly forgotten in the past few years.

I see now that there are links to previous years' threads in there. It seems like they used to be organised at the beginning of October. Which probably means it is too late this year. :/ Ah well.
