Canadian Politics: Is that a Light at the End of the Tunnel?

Apparently a curfew was recommended but Ford’s angry rural MPPs vociferously opposed it. Too bad they couldn’t take a lesson from Quebec.

I am someone that has followed a lot of restrictions and taken tons of precautions, but until they close down businesses that are driving infections, and provide the support necessary to let people stay home, I will never endorse nor follow a curfew. Fuck that. We are not slaves.

This latest announcement is more of the same. Punish people but still expect them to go out there and make money for our overlords. Lets bans public gatherings, close park amenities and threatens regular citizens with tickets, instead of dealing with the actual sources of infections.

Did anyone ever hear of the soccer field outbreak? Or the one at Trinity Bellwoods? No, of course not - because the outbreaks are all happening at countless workplaces across the Province.

I was actually envisaging what you say plus a curfew.

You know as well as I do that if this government implemented a curfew, there is no way they will close those businesses. Because of light switches or something.

Anyway, I don't see what a curfew accomplishes that the public gathering bans does not. The curfew just seems like it is ripe for abuse and harassment of minorities.

I live in a neighborhood that parties in the park late at night. They’re all white. There’s a fire pit in the park where they’ve built fires pretty well every night and sit around drinking.

So then the police can ticket them and disperse under the public gathering ban. We don't need a curfew for that, and the police don't need additional powers to do that.

I think I made enough comments during the week. Everyone moved up sharply. The cases in the North are all in Iqaluit. The numbers in Ontario are horrible. I mentioned that the experts were saying we need to vaccinate 100,000 a day, and while we do more than that during the week, the numbers are lousy on the weekend. Why don't people in Ontario want to be vaccinated on the weekend? We did hit the 100k average from the 10th to the 17th, but we should do better. 66,897 done on Sunday.

Looks like the usual pattern last week, highest numbers on Thursday and Friday and a drop to Monday, let's see what happens this week. Restrictions have been going on for more than a week in most provinces, we should start seeing results from that combined with vaccinations, which averaged 281,000 a day this past week.

On one hand we have some good news in Ontario today, the lowest number of new cases since April 8, 3,469. However, we also had a low number of test results, 42,873, similar to last Tuesday's report, 42,167, when we reported 3,670 new cases. It's the same pattern, week after week, just like we have a pattern of a sharp drop in vaccinations over the weekend every week.

I wonder if there's an overtime issue here. ie the Ford government won't pay enough workers. Or, they could just be burned out, without a lot of back-up workers for the weekend.

As I expected, yesterday’s Ontario new cases was back up to 4,212, slightly higher than last’s week’s Wednesday number of 4,156, but then it was followed by a Thursday number of 4,736. I expected more of the same today, but the number is lower, 3,682. I had to go look at the test numbers, and we did 54,246 tests, about the same as Apr. 14 when there were the 4,156 new cases. Grasping for any good news here, folks.

I see that Nova Scotia all of a sudden has a hot spot going. There are 38 new cases today, meaning 87 new cases since Monday, which is shocking for the province. Four cases have been related to travel and 19 connected to the travelers. There’s a press conference at 3:30 that might explain more.

On a brighter note, Ontario administered 136,695 and 134,920 vaccines doses the last two days, which came as a pleasant surprise. Almost a third of those over 16 have had their first dose now, we should hit that number at the end of today or tomorrow.

I switched from Rogers to Bell yesterday, and my installer was a young Indian fellow who was very happy that his wife was getting vaccinated while he was at my house, and he was getting vaccinated today. He said he just happened to glance at the registration site for the clinic being held at that temple folks living around here can see from the 427 as you go north. He thought all the spots got taken in about 10 minutes.

Ford apparently has flip-flopped on the idea of paid sick leave. He’s in 14 days quarantine right now because a staff member has tested positive.

I assume that's the hotspot clinic located in Etobicoke but meant for my area code in Brampton.   Grrrrrr.   Rumours abound that it was all nepotistically distributed to temple-connected people.

There's also only 8 pharmacies per 100k people offering the AZ vaccine in Brampton, while non-hotspots like Kingston has about 36 pharmacies per 100k.

Something like 22.5% of covid tests are coming up positive here.  It's a bloody cocktail for creating a  "Brampton variant".  It's not a mere "hotspot" it's a wildfire.

Halifax (and most of the HRM) went back into a four week lock down as of yesterday. Went from single digits up to 150 cases gah. We have community spread now from the few fuckos who didn't isolate when returning from outside the province (or those they live with didn't isolate). I don't think any are in the hospital though, which is good.

Vaccine rollout is still slow, but I'm sure we won't consider sending our supply to other harder hit (because they didn't lock down like we did) areas now. The premier was against it before anyway.

I'm still working from home, but I don't know yet how it will affect Mr. Tyr. He travels for work mostly around the HRM and to the South and Western shores. Just have to wait and see, I guess. Blah.

The prime minister just announced we’ve ordered 35 M booster shots from Pfizer for delivery next year. I guess Moderna lost out on that one.

And Ontario has announced it’s first case of the rare blood clot after a man in his 60s received the AZ vaccine. Apparently it’s case number 4 already. I heard about the first case in Alberta, but I missed the news about number 2 and 3.

Sadly, after the nice drop in cases yesterday Ontario announced 4,505 today.

eta: actually, we have an order for 35 M Pfizer in 2022 plus an option for 30 M more, 30 M for 2023 and an option for 30 M more, and an option for 60 M in 2024.

You can see the climb in the Atlantic provinces pretty clearly now. Most of it is Nova Scotia, as I mentioned in a post above. New restrictions are in place and travelers from out of province are not allowed unless they are essential workers. BC has asked people not to travel between health districts.

I saw that two days ago the number of vaccines the government has went up by 300,000. That must be J&J, no? But I think they come next week. Did we get some AZ in? NACI has recommended the age for receiving the AZ vaccine be dropped to 30.

Well, Ontario has now, finally, officially, asked for the help of the military. The NDP were demanding to know in Parliament why the federal government hadn’t sent in the troops, I have no idea if they genuinely didn’t know Ontario had to ask for help or if they just wanted to play the same blame game provincial Conservatives have been playing.

I don't want to jinx the country but it looks like the growth of new cases has slowed, except for Nova Scotia, which has been setting new records for 5 or 6 days in a row.

Numbers are doing well on the vaccine front. This week we will have almost 2 M doses delivered, 1 M from Pfizer, 650,000 from Moderna (we hope) and 300,000 from J&J. And then next week we get 2 M doses of Pfizer every week for May and June and perhaps July, and iirc, for part of that time we will get 3 M a week.

I wouldn't think so... It's by where you live, isn't it?  Anyway, booked my appointment at the Brampton Civic Hospital clinic since they lowered the age tonight to 45+ without announcing publicly.  But the Twitter account "Vaccine Hunters Canada" was keeping an eye on the registration site.  I see the first two days of the 5 day time slots that were open are already fully booked.  I'm getting mine on May 5th.  Should be Moderna or Pfizer.

I hear people are announcing on twitter they've driven in from Barrie or Niagara (which are not hotspots) and getting vaccines meant for Peel.  They're suppose to check what postal code you live in so someone is not doing their job properly.

As far as I know they weren't suppose to announce the spots opening up until today, but the mayor tweeted it out and then deleted it.

Here's an article on Vaccine Hunters Canada

That's all great for the white collar workers who can spend all day on social media, but that info isn't getting to the most vulnerable population, especially the warehouse workers who are risking their lives so people can get their Amazon packages.
