I had always thought that Jaime and Cersei dying together was just another lie that their relationship was built on, but after some more consideration, I could see Jaime leaving Cersei, only to return specifically to save her from death, with neither of them making it out. This would make him a good person rather than a bad one, in my opinion; it shows compassion, especially when you remember that Cersei is the mother of his three children. There are plenty of bitterly divorced men and women who would nevertheless try to save their ex if they knew they were on death's door.
