Really cant get excited about BoJo being on his bike 7 miles away. When I cycle i end up about 10 miles from home before I return. Nothing I've read says you have to ride round in circles in your street/area.

My issue with it is that it's just another example of 'gotcha' journalism that really distracts from the real issues. The quality of questioning in those briefings is bad enough as it is, trying to get a soundbite or just being along the lines 'why didn't you do this or that'. Rather than getting good quality information about what we are planning to do and when, some journalists are far more engaged in trying to get politicians to say something that will embarrass them so they can stick it in a headline.

Boris on his bike is obviously an attempt to push the whole 'one rule for them and one for us' narrative that everyone is obsessed by (except Piers Morgan who seems to not want to talk very much about his recent holiday to Anigua!), but the point is I think most people outside of some lunatic lockdown sceptics are understanding of the lockdown measures because vaccinations show a way out of them. So there is less resentment now about heavy handed policing than I think there was halfway through last year.

On top of that, Boris doesn't seem to have broken any rules, and it's hard to see what actual harm he's causing by being on his bike, even going 7 miles from home.

It's a storm in a tiny teacup, but illustrative of the state of where we are if stuff like this keeps becoming headline news. I've not enjoyed seeing anyone rebuked for messing up lockdown rules this past year, even journalists I don't like such as Kay Burley.

The Sunday figures reported on Monday are always lower than other days. That's still ~25% higher (+103) than last week.

Yeah, that was me completely losing track of what day it was.

not really the right thread for this, but anyone else hear a big bang about 15 mins ago?

It shook my windows in Billericay Essex,  also getting reports of my teammates hearing it in Basildon, Ongar, Wickford and Brentwood.

or there was lots of smaller Bangs all about the same time over Essex?

edit  -  Looks like it was 2 Typhoons sent to escort a plane from Germany that had stopped responding.

I see #ToryCorruption is trending on twitter again.

This time, it's for systematically serving up £5 worth of food (in one example - a loaf of bread, three slices of cheese, a tin of beans, two carrots, two bananas, three apples, two potatoes, a bag of pasta, three Frubes, two Soreen bars and a tomato) in hampers that are costing taxpayers £30 a pop.

The crook responsible for this is another Tory donor.

Another one for the Good Law Project.

The women who were fined £200 each for driving five miles for a walk in Derbyshire would probably beg to differ.

Johnson was driven to Stratford. Or at least that is what we must assume given his office's refusal to say how he got to the park.

The fact that the above mentioned fines were rescinded only after Boris got rumbled just shows they are moving the goalposts again a la Cummings.

And look, of course the Government is giving us far more important things to be getting upset about.

But during the first lockdown, if I had to go anywhere in my car it was usually pretty hard to find a parking space when I returned home. Now, the street is virtually empty, every day of the week. I can't imagine that many of my neighbours are essential workers.

So when Bozo drives to a park on the other side of London before returning to Downing Street to declare he might have to tighten lockdown rules because not enough people are following them, he can go fuck himself.

The two women were meeting someone outside of their household. Johnson was cycling on his own. You can argue about whether they should have been fined but it was pretty unquestionably more of a risk than what Johnson did.

ETA: Johnson's been pretty rubbish as a leader but this clearly didn't break any rules and probably still won't break any rules if they decide to increase restrictions. There are plenty of real issues to pay attention to right now.

Have to agree there is nothing to Johnson going out cycling.

Last weekend we drove a few miles out into a quiet bit of the countryside for a few hours walking. Which frankly felt a lot safer than walking round nearby streets or the busy local park. We fully intend to do the same next weekend.

That seems entirely reasonable, yet rozzers are fining people whilst confiscating cups of tea saying you can't go for a picnic.

The message is clear. When exercising, you have to stay local. Unless you are part of the ruling elite, in which case you can do whatever the fuck you like and the 'rules' will be massaged retrospectively in order to excuse your hypocrisy.

Duh, if we give poor mothers the £30 vouchers they'll only go back to spending it on giant TVs and mobile phones.

Just pointing out that one of the arguments against free school meals was that it’s better to just give mothers the money or that there were other better ways to provide support to those who need it.

Bit odd to use this very same argument against the government now.

Well if they fine us, you can expect to see me in the news making a fuss about it. "Local area" is pretty ambiguous as far as I am concerned.

Well, I live about three or four miles from Stratford. In London, there's no way I'd get away with classing that as local. Unless of course I was a Downing Street press officer.

I see your sarcasm filter is as effective as ever.
