The new Acting DHS is FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor. After reading the cliff notes of his bio, there's nothing inherently Trump-like about him; except for the fact that he ended up in the administration in the first place. But the position he was originally appointed and senate confirmed to was Deputy Administrator of FEMA in 2018; which isn't that high up the totem pole. When the FEMA Administrator resigned, he was named Acting, and then senate confirmed last January in an 81-8 vote. And prior to joining FEMA he was actually part of a Democratic state government, he was the Director of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency until 2018. This is, according to reports, the reason he didn’t resign on the 6th. Either he’s satisfied safeguards are in place to stop Trump from doing anything really crazy, or he’s being pushed out by Trump for his disloyalty.
