Cricket 40: Paines in the Ashes

Not buying into the Smith crease thing. I doubt anyone would've cared if things didn't get heated on that last day. People are just trying to pile on the pressure (which is fair enough).

Even if there was malicious intent behind it, how is it cheating? Petty, sure, but cheating? Fuck off.

Edit: Also, considering how well behaved Warner has been, he is clearly our next captain candidate! If only to piss off all the boarders

A few comments on England's team/selection for this first test match:

  • It looks like one J Bairstow is going to get another run in test cricket as a specialist batsman, in that cursed #3 slot. I know there is a lot of love for Jonny, but I'm sorry, an average of 34 over 70 matches doesn't cut it for me. He is 'keeper or not in the side. (No doubt he will get a century at Galle now).
  • I know he's probably not going to play, but Foakes should be in the team and 'keeping. Buttler should just be playing as a batsman in these conditions, where you are going to be up to the stumps for a lot of the day. Foakes was man of the series in 2018...
  • It's a real shame Mo can't play, though I'm looking forward to seeing what Leach can do. And no Pope or Stokes either.

ETA: As for Sri Lanka...the return of Mathews and Chandimal is a big boost. Hard to pick a winner in this series.

Yep, it's a wounded battlefield on both sides. India still much worse off though. If Bumrah is out, every pace bowler they field will essentially be a debutant in this series.

That Jonny...a natural number three!

Absolutely. Right up until the next time he gets bowled playing a big drive! I don’t think the rest of the team like him much, so he’ll probably be out of the team altogether again before long.

So that went badly wrong for Sri Lanka then.

A couple of my neighbours were meant to be going to Sri Lanka for the Galle test last year before it was cancelled. They were gutted when it was called off. It does look a great place to go to watch some cricket.

Did you see the story about the England supporter who arrived for last year’s cancelled series and just decided to stay for the next one? If only.
