Cricket 40: Paines in the Ashes

The spinners took wickets but were unable to keep the runs down, the two paceman tried hard but were far short of Archer and Anderson and the top order just looks rubbish. Bring back Keaton Jennings and/or Jonny!

I thought Olly Stone bowled really well. There was just nothing in it for the seamers this time out. On the plus side for England if they can keep Archer, Stone and Wood fit they should have a useful battery of fast bowlers to take to Australia this time.

I think England would be better placed if they had Jennings and Bairstow in the top three but to be fair to the guys playing I think it was very tough with the newer ball on that pitch. None of the Indian top order other than Sharma in the first innings did great either. Burns has the additional problem of being left handed up against Ashwin.

Where to now for England? India looked a completely different side in this test (esp in the spin department), and at the same time a number of fragilities emerged for the tourists that I think could plague them for the rest series.

I think England need the day/night test to go their way. I don't know how they usually go in India but you'd think it'll be tougher for the spinners at least and they'll be crossing all their fingers and toes that the pink SG ball swings under the lights.

ETA: Moeen Ali is leaving the tour apparently, which isn't ideal. He didn't have a great test but he's probably more likely to take wickets than the other spinners available to England. They would have hoped that after some red ball cricket under his belt he might have at least improved his control a bit as the series went on.

ETA2: Bairstow's actually back for the third test. There was a bit of talk Archer might be leaving the tour after two tests like Ali but he's in the squad they've announced for the third test too. So some good news.

On Mo - he was scheduled to leave the India tour after two tests. This was pre-agreed. But Smith and Root changed their minds yesterday and asked him to stay (due to Bess’ dropping), putting him in an unfair position I think from a family perspective.

Yeah, I don't think you can hold it against Ali. This was scheduled to be his break from bubble life and apparently if he doesn't take it and gets an IPL contract he won't see his family for five months. I don't think you can really blame Root and Smith for asking him to stay either. They're doing their best to give guys breaks but ultimately their job is to win and they'd probably have a better chance of doing that with Ali available.

Ultimately it's up to Ali to be content. If that's what his captain wants, he's no choice, so better get on with it and perform memorably...

Speaking of IPL contracts, his blitzkrieg yesterday was nearly enough to give Misbah a run for his money, for fastest Test half century record. It seemed a message to Delhi (jingoist) Capitals by bashing two of their spinners, "Pick me or regret, you don't want to be on the receiving end". Apart from Ash and Axar, Kuldeep too was toured around the ground, but him getting revenge in the end reinforced the subtle message...

PS

It seems we are discussing more about Ind, Eng, Aussies and maybe Kiwis more than, say, Pak, Bang, Lanka, W Indies, etc. I haven't been here that long compared to most of you guys, but just a feeling... Is it just a recent trend or usual? No problem with it. After all, one can only talk about the good performances and make occasional remarks about some underdog's rare performances... Totally understand. Adiós

@TheLastWolf: I think we try to be balanced but in the end a lot of us favour our home nations and/or the powerhouse test teams.

As much as I love Sri Lankan and South African cricket, it is a hard to get too excited about their test teams when they are at a low ebb in terms of quality. In years gone by, this was a very different situation.

I think Pakistan and Bangladesh could come good in the near future, and the Windies have had a mini resurgence since the Jason Holder era, but none of them play consistent enough cricket for me to watch them in every test match.

U agree with everything except Bangladesh. Their Nidahas final with (yet another) second string India remains in my memory. Dinesh Karthik with that last ball 6...Washington's debut and Man of the Series. Lots of other debutants and bench warmers... Yet Bangladesh. Like Australia.

Faf du Plessis has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. We are going to be shit for a long time.

T20. IPL. I don't want him to leave that anytime soon. He had a standalone phenomenal season last year

Kings XI Punjab of IPL changes logo and name officially to Punjab Kings. Personally, I hate elitist assholes. This weak feeble pathetic miserable lol blah blah blah attempt at reducing it

Here

IPL 2021 AUCTION OVER!

Phew

Raining money...

Chris Morris will be the most surprised as he becomes the highest earner via auction. Whopping 16.25 crore rupees. 162.5 million rupees. How much is that in dollars? Damn. You guys do the math please, yourself. He'll be like "ME!?"

Totally not worth it Rajasthan... You let Smith, but this...

Kyle Jamieson and Jhye Richardson were signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings respectively for record prices of 15 & 14 crore rupees.

Maxwell's potential got him 14.25 crores from RCB. Will he live up to his expectations at least this year...?

Meanwhile Krishnappa Gowtham became the highest-earning uncapped player in IPL auction history after Chennai Super Kings signed him for Rs 9.25 crore.

Cheteshwar Pujara picked up by a team after 6 years. CSK...

Worth noting he was U19 World cup Man of the series...

Tasmanian quick Riley Meredith was a surprise pick of sorts when Punjab Kings shelled out Rs 8 crores to acquire his signature

Tamil Nadu’s swashbuckling middle-order batsman M Shahrukh Khan for Rs 5.25 crore picked by PBKS. SRK, same as name as the Bollywood Superstar and owner of Kolkata Knight Riders. Memes aplenty about him and Preity Zinta, owner of Punjab. Veer meets Zara lol.

Mumbai picked Arjun Tendulkar just for his surname. Nepotism.

Sam Billings who went unsold the first time made a timely tweet and got picked the next round...

Harbhajan got himself a KKR seat. Smith 2.20 cr Delhi. No 1 Dawid Malan picked cheap by Punjab

Oh and Moeen is in CSK... @Paxter

Very coincidental, since he was asking Ashwin about a popular Tamil movie star's latest update

I could go on....

Here's the full list

Lots of notable Unsold

Guptill, Hales, Roy, Marsh, C Anderson, Darren Bravo,

Cottrell, A Rashid, Sodhi, Aaron, McClenaghan, Abbot, Carey, Wade, Perera etc

Oh and SRH picked Kedar Jadav for base price. After CSK, I thought impossible

I'm a diehard CSK fan as some of you might know from last (miserable) season. The only miserable one. Most consistent. I'd be carried away and go on... so here's a list of all records.

First whole squad again

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, N. Jagadeesan (wk), Robin Uthappa, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Karn Sharma, R. Sai Kishore, Mitchell Santner, Imran Tahir, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi, Josh Hazlewood, KM Asif, Moeen Ali, K Gowtham, Cheteshwar Pujara, M Harisankar Reddy, K. Bhagath Varma, C Hari Nishanth

Emboldened obviously foreign players

Italicized are native state of Tamilnadu players. Chennai is in that state as some might know. CSK has had a bad rep of not picking Tamil players in auctions. They let Varun Chakravarty, Ravi Ashwin (ex csk, exception partially), Murugan Ashwin, Washington Sundar, Shah Rukh Khan etc. The ones they pick are mostly wasted underrated talent made to be bench warmers like Baba Aparajit, Abhinav Mukund, Jaggadeesan, Nishant etc with the exception of Subramanyam Badrinath and Ravi Ashwin.

Here's my CSK playing XI

Openers

Ruturaj Gaikwad (4 ipl matches, 3 half centuries, 3 fifties in a row)

Faf. Nothing else needs to be said

One down

Raina. Same

4th

Ambati Rayudu or Jaggadeesan

5th

MSDhoni obviously

6th

Sam Curran or Dwayne Bravo

7th

SIR Jadeja or Sai Kishore or Krishnappa Gowtham

8th

Mitchell Santner or Karn Sharma or Imran Tahir

9th

Shardul Thakur

Look at the batting depth potential...

10th

Deepak Chahar obviously

11th

Lungisani Ngidi or Josh Hazlewood

4 foreign players limitations considered

Haha no way am I turning to CSK just because of Mo! Will have to look at the squad lists in detail to choose my least hated team.

Was a bit of a strange auction I thought with a number of very speculative picks.

Agreed. Mini auctions tend to be like this. But once in 5 years mega auction where teams can retain only 3, Right to match 2 out of 4,things get interesting. Same 80 crore rupees purse. Plus talks of new teams

I don't really get how they're valuing players but obviously teams wanted allrounders and fast bowlers. My main takeaway though was thinking who the hell is Kyle Jamieson?

Shit shit shit...

Turns out it was George Bernard Shaw who famously remarked the 11 fools playing, 11,000 fools watching and not Winston Churchill as I wrongly believed. Tho it's more like 22 'fools' playing and 22 million 'fools' watching now, I could tolerate it if it was Churchill, after all, Winston called Gandhi himself an half naked fakir...

But Shaw!?

Unacceptable

Double post, but have you guys looked at the absolutely amazing Motera stadium in Ahmedabad!?

Biggest in the world. Move over Melbourne, Eden Gardens. 1,10,000 seating capacity, half more than enough for the 3rd pink ball day night test.

More facts here

I enjoyed that knock from Devon Conway - first time watching him bat.

And it's nice to actually watch Australia tour (albeit not for tests!)

I know that COVID is a big factor...but it's kind of crazy to think that Australia will have played just one away test series between early 2019 and mid-2022 (the 2019 Ashes). In that same period England will have toured several nations.

Easy win for the Black Caps.

I can't quite remember how Aus got to second on the T20I rankings. Their team composition and strategy always looks a bit hodge-podge to me, and they are overly reliant on Maxwell.

I get the impression there are generally fewer T20Is compared to the other formats so the rankings may be less meaningful and more easily swayed by a few good games.

True. I don’t know why I look at the rankings anyway. It’s one thing (among many) that the ICC has never really cracked.

Personally I think the WTC hasn’t been that bad though. I know everyone rightly criticized the weird points system (which failed anyway due to the pandemic). But it has actually given some extra meaning to certain contests.

I’m going to go out on a bit of a limb and say that England should play three specialist seamers tonight. A lot of people are saying that we will see another turning track, but with Mo gone home and Bess not offering enough control, I’d back in Leach plus some overs from Root to provide enough spin.
