HBO Planning Dunk and Egg, Other Thrones-properties

Westeros

The popularity of the Game of Thrones TV franchise will be more firmly determined by what happens when House of the Dragon comes out and if anyone watches it. Until that happens it will be hard to fully gauge the damage to the brand caused by Season 8, although it is also worth noting that GoT continues to do well for HBO and now HBO Max.

It's perfectly possibly for a show to be awful or weak but still pull in good audiences. Star Trek: Discovery has had a mediocre, at best, reception for three seasons straight but it's driving CBS All Access to wildly outperform its original audience targets, especially considering they have sweet FA else on their service to make people sign up (well, they do have The Stand now as well, but that's also had a mixed response).

Since it is impossible to see into the future, heated debates over the long-term viability of the Game of Thrones TV franchise are pointless. People should cool down and return to the thread topic.

The earth being round is backed up by scientific facts, and that’s what I’m doing. Using facts to support my argument. You should try doing the same. All the facts I listed are concrete and clearly point to the final season being highly popular, and you can’t even begin to counter them.

BEST. SEASON. EVA

UGH... Robert's rebelion will only be torture porn, im sure there will be a scene with Raella being raped and Dany birth just for drama, the same way they did with Sansa in season 5, or Robert drunkely harrasing Lyanna to justify her breaking her betrothal, they might romantize Rhaegar's actions and make him "the good guy" when in fact it's all Rhaegar and Aerys fault. It will also have scenes of Rhaenys stabbed 50 time, Aegon dashed against a wall and Elia raped and murdered, and in Game Of Thrones season 7 we learn that Rhaegar anulled his mariage and bastardized his own kids and they got killed for nothing... And not to mention every single prequel will lead to disaster of season 8.

Agree. Don't understand why people want Robert's Rebellion - we know the story, we know what happens, we know the characters (they're just younger), it's not interesting. Much more exciting to see other stories from the Westeros world, eg Dunk & Egg and House of the Dragon. With that said, I can't see Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen...

I love animation, so the possibility of an animated ASOIAF show for adults is really exciting to me. Granted, you would think that the Dance would be the right show to adapt in this case, since the dragon scenes are probably going to be nightmare to film with CGI.

Perhaps this is the venue for Empire of Ash?

What I could see there is the Conquest, Aenys and Maegor, and later stuff like the Blackfyre Rebellion.

But more importantly, it is indeed a venue for the Century of Blood, the Valyrian show, and, especially, Nymeria's story. The latter would really a big thing - three hundred dragons, gigantic armies, the insanely broad Rhoyne, etc.

They could also do something completely out of the left field - like a show about Corlys Velaryon's voyages (something that could be a natural outgrowth of HoD) or, perhaps even better, have George come up with a draft or some notes about Elissa Farman's voyages and discoveries in the west.

That would be completely unchartered territory.

A animated show about the rise or Valyria and their wars with Ghis would be cool. And while a D&E show would be cool I guess, I've never particularly had any interest in it becoming a show. Like there is other stuff id rather see like the Conquest, or other historical events.

One of my favorite things ever is the Lord of the Rings animated movie by Ralph Bakshi.  If they could do something in the same vein it would be great.  Personally I think that the Dunk and Egg story would lend itself to animation pretty well.

"Dunk and Egg” would absolutely fail. It would ruin the possibility of a huge success continuing. It’s the hobbit of a song of ice and fire. No dragons, no Magic, no sex, no stakes, no Thrills, no chills, no exciting plot twists, no political scheming, nothing.

It doesn’t have a well-developed plot with several intertwined storylines, Interesting, deep, and well written grandiose characters, politics, drama, and the "epic" touch that made ASOIAF so appealing, the good things in the books are Bloodraven and the blackfyre rebellion (most of the time it happens off-screen and flashbacks), and build up to coming wars, and the books aren’t finished yet so we‘ll have the TV show Spoiling the books again.

 And I don't think the general audience Will like it, The history of the Blackfyres was never included, Young Griff/Aegon was omitted from Game of Thrones . So now, GOT is left with a general show audience who doesn’t know or care about the blackfyre. People Will say it's Just some average action, adventure,” the village of the week” histories like the old Xena warrior princess and Hercules, and since dunk and egg is considerably tamer and light history HBO Will probably try to make it a family show and NOTHING in this universe is for kids ever.

Dunk and egg, Robert rebellion, and animated series is a sign of HBO’s desperation since they lose half audience and are losing badly to Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and others streaming service HBO numbers are CW level low people Will see those prequels as just an attempt to make more money off of the former popularity of Game of Thrones

I was saying this to a friend the other day—it does feel desperate. They’re also apparently considering remaking Harry Potter as a TV show, and then there’s the True Blood reboot.

True Blood reboot? WTF for? First, the actual show isn't even that old. Second, it became a parody of itself after the first couple of seasons and third, there's been a glut of vampire shit in the last few years, with most such shows being cancelled after 1 season.

As for an HP series? God, no.

Agree with the analysis on D&E - it's a fun sidebar for ASOIAF readers but I can't see it being a hit with the mainstream. HoD, yes perhaps. But not this.

I also think that Dunk & Egg will not be as popular with the mainstream for the reasons mentioned earlier. This is already evident from the reviews from mainstream readers for the book A Knight of Seven Kingdoms. Those people expect something similar to ASOIAF, but get a story they perceive as "shallow, naive and predictable."

As I've said before, I would have been more comfortable with a film trilogy, with one film covering the first three books of Dunk & Egg. There is just too little material, unless it becomes a mini-series that will consist of only 12 episodes (1 per book).

It is incomprehensible, though, that Brynden Rivers has not been cast in Game of Thrones. I am reminded of that again. Why D&D chose a self-created character (without any backstory) in his place.... No idea, but god... Brynden would connect both series for the mainstream audience. Now those will not understand the link between both TV series at all.

- Duncan the Tall and Aegon V may have been named or described four times in Game of Thrones. The mainstream will not remember that.
- Brienne would be a descendant of Duncan, hinted at in A Feast for Crows. Duncan's shield is not seen in Game of Thrones.
- We can assume that the events of Summerhall will have a possible relationship to the events of the ASOIAF books (prophecies, magic?), but it is only mentioned once in Game of Thrones.
- There is no mention of the Blackfyre pretenders in Game of Thrones (and no Young Griff).

They could expand the setting of the D&E stories.  So while D&E feature, it is just one storyline in many threads.  So the Targaryen court is another thread.  The Blackfyre's another.  And D&E weave in and out of those.

With a House of the Dragon series, this may seem too similar though.

HBO Reportedly Developing Game Of Thrones Movies (wegotthiscovered.com)

So apart from
- House of the Dragon;
- Dunk & Egg series;
- Robert's Rebellion series;
- an animated series;

there are also rumors that there are movies in the making that take place in the same universe. These are still rumors and no further information is available.

I did not know if this was already known, so my apologies if it has already been posted somewhere on the forum.

I'd rather they make 1h 30 min movies about some of the places on the planet that have so far remained unexplored. Not only would it allow for creative freedom due to little known facts about some of those locations but it also allows for HBO to explore different genres. A lot of those places are said to have fantastical elements to it so HBO needn't worry about lack of GCI cashcows (monsters, dragons, basilisks etc) or magic.

You can make a horror movie out of something like Stygai. A horror/mystical movie out of Asshai. Or combine the two due to geographical closeness. So many places on the map that we know nothing about.

I would love this. Hopefully if they do make movies at least one or two will be exploring locations in Essos.

I'm wondering if Flea Bottom is just a code word to keep whatever they're planning under wraps. It could be that one of these shows is something totally unique, set in the world of ASOIAF. If they're making this many shows, it's not unreasonable that they invent at least one new story, especially if it's about smallfolk.

I'm guessing the Nymeria show is an attempt to attract the many Dany fans who enjoyed watching her conquer Essos. Maybe it will be successful, but I find it more likely that they won't strike lighting twice. And I've never gotten the impression that book fans were all that interested in Nymeria's story.

What's most striking is the focus on voyaging (Nymeria, the Sea Snake) and more unfinished stories (Dunk & Egg), when there are so many other options. There's Jaehaerys and Alysanne, Daeron-Baelor-Aegon IV, the Blackfyre Rebellions, etc. for the Targaryens, and then there are the dozens of other families they could focus on. You could definitely write some fun stories about some new Lannisters or Greyjoys or Tyrells.
