Mrstrategy Posted February 5, 2021 Share Posted February 5, 2021 How much of the gold cloaks captains would really support their lord comander slynt/baelish against other members of the small council or royal family like Ned or cersei Stark if contacted by both sides directly like Jacelyn Bywater since he suppose to be honorable and less likely to be corrupt/bribed and controls probably at a substantial number of goldcloaks as captain of a gate? The bribery trickles down and some money come their way. In Westeros, it's usually better for survival to follow your commander. The lords usually followed their lords paramount for this same reason. They are not going to against Joffrey/Tommen/Tywin/ Regent Cersei or Robert if they are the ones in control even if their Commander explicitly demanded so, yet if things are not (situation after Robert's death or after Cersei screwed up with the Faith). They are likely to follow their captains to the Red Keep. The extent of influence Petyr holds over them is tied to how much he can bribe the captains of the ranks. Since Bywater doesn't work by bribery and he cleaned the House a little, Petyr holds no power over the Gold Cloaks. Since, according to Varys at least, Bywater is a loyal dog to whomever put him in office. In a tense situation he'd likely follow whomever gave him the Office. The Merling King Posted February 5, 2021 Share Posted February 5, 2021 The current leadership seems to be either corrupt enough to bribe or pragmatic enough to switch to the winning side. It would have been interesting to see what happened if Renly makes it to Kingslanding. He was technically in charge of the gold cloaks as master of Laws. I wonder if he could have set something up with Janos Slynt to either betray the Lannister or open the city gates to his enormous host, similar to Daemon Targeryen and Luther Largent Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
