Who's hurting more over this, Tiger or Rory? Tiger lost a lot more money, but Rory died on his cross for nothing and then had to say he's kind of okay with this new venture, he just hates LIV, but the SIF is okay.

Rory gained a fuckton of kudos and respect. And he can look himself in the mirror. When you have nothing that's a hard choice.

When you are obscenely rich already thats a price worth paying to know you did the right thing.

He rolled over right away though to the financial backer to LIV and just called it something else and said it was okay. In a sense he's the politician who loudly fought against corruption, then got bought and said the other corruption was the real problem.

I'd be mad the PGA gave up so easily. LIV had no foothold. The checks they must have wrote in private had to be huge as this screams bribes.

He certainly seems pretty pissed off  theres a limit how far you can slag your work off though in public.

And you could always hope that a normal investor would eventually back down.  But LIV have unlimited finances.  They could still get tired of it but maybe not.  And didn't a LIV golfer win one of the majors only a few weeks ago?  That could only be a boost for them.

I don't particularly follow golf but I do keep an eye on the Irish golfers.  I'm glad McIlroy was given a heads up a least.  Gave him a chance to adapt to the news.  He might wonder now did this distraction over the last year lose him a major but hopefully he still thinks it was worth the fight, even if he lost more than he won in the end.

You can always quit.

That's the problem. I've heard all kinds of numbers that they have at their resources and the lowest was $660B. You cannot fight a country that has oil money. Like I said before they could buy the NFL, NBA, PL and that wouldn't cost them even half of what they likely have.

It will be interesting to see if he eventually puts it all behind him or will he fall a little out of love with the game.  That is the difference between winning and losing.

Watch the money. I said from the start it always wins. If the players who stayed loyal to the PGA get a bag and the purses go up a ton, most hurt feels will go away. I just don't get how the money works with any of this, but I guess it doesn't matter when you have unlimited resources.

Certainly sounds true for 99%+ of players.  Could there be a couple of players that plough on but just lose a bit of a spark for the game?  Maybe.

Maybe, but Rory has been the loudest and flipped quickly. My guess is the players that would leave are just good enough to make the tour and certainly good enough to retire to be a highly paid country club instructor.

Still can't believe Tiger lost nearly a billion dollars over all of this.

I was going for a more whimsical point.  The player that will grin and bear it.  But something will be lost and he will never achieve his potential again.

Difficult to ever prove, if it did happen.

As you say, most players wouldn't care as long as the money is good.

  • 3 months later...

The Americans have really had the better of the four balls in the afternoon but Jon Rahm with an eagle on the 18th to save a tie means they haven’t really made up any ground.

ETA: Wow, the wheels have come off for Homa and Clark over the last couple of holes too. Big day for Europe.

Not looking great so far.

This time zone is really messing with my watching schedule. I was going to watch the highlights from yesterday this morning but apparently it’s already well into this morning’s matches.

ETA: Apparently 9&7 is the biggest margin of victory ever in a Ryder Cup foursomes match. Against Koepka and Scheffler as well.
