Mrstrategy
Which of the best real life historical politicians of Realpolitik if inserted into Ned stark just after Robert rebellion would strengthen the North as well as secure house Stark position and survival in the game of thrones? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realpolitik
Nathan Stark
That would be... Ned Stark. House Stark is an institution unto itself in the North and their way of doing politics is not the southron way. Take a look at Bran's second and third chapters in ACoK to see the Northern version of the game of thrones in action. Ned knew how to handle Northern politics and had most of the North solidly on his side. It is very telling that, despite the Starks fall from power, the Manderly's and Glovers and Umbers and Mountain Clans all see the Starks as their own best means for ataining power. Instead of becoming the dominant power of the North in their own right, they all think returning the Starks to dominance is in their best interest. It shows you how much power the Starks have as an institution. The more I think about it, besides Ned himself, the best historical person to be Lord of Winterfell might be U.S. President Lyndon Johnson, who knew a great deal about rough and tumble politicking. He would probably be an Umber though. His style seems more like them than the solemn and stern Starks.

There's not much more of that kind of maneuvering outside of Eddard that makes any sort of sense without author weighing the scales.
Loose Bolt
How about Harry S Truman. When he became president USA was ally of Soviet Union. But during his reign he turned USA against USSR and started Cold War. In fact I assume that Little Boy and Fat Man were at least partly messages to Uncle Joe. Or his foreign policy was totally different than his predecessor had. IMHO the North should have become more independent. For instance they should have took back New Gift and repopulate it, rebuild Moat Cailin and build navies for for both coasts. Besides Ned should have stayed at Winterfell and also make sure that his children will marry his bannermen. So even Trump would have been better lord of WF than Ned or Robb. After all USA survived his presidency.

I don't know if I would put the Cold War on Truman. Stalin's taking over Eastern Europe and general threat against Western Europe probably played a larger role. They don’t fare well outside of the North. They can continue practicing the lord’s right as they wish and his successors can go back to feeding humans to that tree of theirs.
