I’m not all that sold on photo Id but I also don’t see it as some devious trick by the Tories to be in power forever. I feel like a lot of things it’s a narrative transplanted from the US and not really examined

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/voter-id-key-facts-and-figures/

So the electoral commission have been wanting photo identification since 2014. They reckon 92% of electors should have it.

They also think it’s whites, and older people who are less likely to have ID.  So if it was introduced surely it would hurt the Tories more than anyone?

HoI's link puts the case against voter ID very well: all of the evidence is that impersonation happens incredibly rarely and in most elections not at all. Pilots show hundreds of legitimate voters were turned away at the polls. Therefore the harms of voter ID massively outweigh the benefits and there is no sane argument for adopting it at all.

You know an idea's really bad when Spocky and HoI agree that it's pointless.

So if its not only pointless to do this as it solves something that is not currently a problem (but may be in some strange unknown future)  + it would actually be harmful as the pilots have shown with voters turned away.

Introducing a Free (at point of collection) National ID card will still cost the Tax Payer money.  I'm rather under the impression there is not a lot of spare money going around right now.   So maybe we should wait until there is more of an indication of a problem than just 1 person impersonating someone else to vote.

pebs: that's all true, but here's the problem. None of that helps Priti Patel become Prime Minister.

maybe she should suggest using the money saved by not having a national ID card system (for those without other Photo ID) on the NHS or maybe feeding children or doing whatever Marcus Rashford campaigns for next.

Not really on-brand for Patel. Maybe if she used the money to fund public stonings of asylum seekers?

The NHS needs funds? Shouldn't it swim in the billions that the EU stole from the UK now?

I forgot she has to get the Tory Party to vote her as Boris's replacement, and not do something that would be genuinely popular....  Oh, yeah   Stoning's it is then.   Maybe she should also buy a really sharp knife to speed things up a bit.

That all got diverted to the people that had Matt Hancock's mobile number or E-mail.

Stats show it really isn’t a problem

The problems with voter malpractive that have arisen in this country relate to fabricating postal votes, treating, and intimidation, rather than personation.

So if the measures in the Queen's Speech all become law, then social media companies will have a duty to 'act on content that is lawful but still harmful such as abuse that falls below the threshold of a criminal offence' and may be fined if they don't.

But universities, colleges and students' unions will have a duty to permit such speech or they may be sued.

You could be invited to speak at my workplace and we'd have to allow it, but we wouldn't be allowed to post clips of the event on Twitter.

Make sense of that.

So at what point do Johnson's money problems become a matter of public concern? I mean, if Johnson was a high ranking rozzer, Ted Hastings would be so far up his colon he'd be able to tickle the PM's tonsils.

Glasgow sends Immigration police away empty-handed. After tweeting that they do not assist in the removal of asylum seekers, Police Scotland took the decison to make the Inmigration officers release the two men in the interests of public safety.
