We all want to be more like Germany. We just don’t have the pure strength of Will.

More like we don't have the pure Triumph of Will.

I can’t read that name without having flashbacks of Junior Trump repeatedly saying “Kimmmmberleh”.

Whenever I read that name I have flashbacks to calling roll and trying my damndest not to look like an ass to students with names I can't possibly pronounce without guidance like Guilfoyle.

Thus the appropriate term in the English language is obviously

Mehrying, long may this cursed union, aka the mehriage, last.

I'm not sure what this means but it sounds like you're trying to force Robin Wright to marry Prince Humperdinck..

Anyway, in actual news, Troy Carter won the runoff for Cedric Richmond's seat tonight, defeating a leftist challenge Karen Carter Peterson, 56 to 44:

The district is majority Black and safe Democratic territory; it includes almost all of New Orleans and stretches north toward Baton Rouge. The former incumbent, Cedric Richmond, vacated the seat to join the Biden administration.

In one of his final acts as a member of Congress, Richmond backed Carter, who also nabbed endorsements from House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.). Peterson was backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), former Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams, EMILY’s List and activist Gary Chambers Jr., who came in third place in the March primary.

Lol, I’m watching Senator Capito on State of the Union talking about how she thinks no taxes need to be raised, and how her idea of paying your fair share for infrastructure means getting people to pay for things they aren’t paying for now, like the drivers of electric cars. And the government should not pay for charging stations across the country, private industry should. Like putting a tax on the drivers of electric cars is going to raise the billions needed for infrastructure and encourage the change to electric vehicles. No taxes need to be raised, no sir, and we all know infrastructure only means roads and bridges, period.

17 senators ask Biden to push for Medicare expansion
"We have an historic opportunity to make the most significant expansion of Medicare since it was signed into law."

A group of 17 senators sent a letter Sunday to President Joe Biden urging him to attempt to expand Medicare as part of his American Families Plan.

“We write to ask that, as part of the American Families Plan, you propose reducing the Medicare eligibility age, expanding Medicare benefits to include hearing, dental, and vision care, implementing a cap on out-of-pocket expenses under traditional Medicare, and negotiating lower drug prices,” the senators said.

Biden is due to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.

"We have an historic opportunity to make the most significant expansion of Medicare since it was signed into law. We look forward to working with you to make this a reality and, in the process, substantially improve the lives of millions of older Americans and persons with disabilities," wrote the group, which consisted of Vermont independent Bernie Sanders and 16 Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Ben Cardin of Maryland and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

Sanders, in particular, has been pushing for an expansion of the Medicare program, which was enacted in 1965 during the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson.

I actually wrote Caputo, and had to correct it.

I saw him more as a semi-functional alcoholic.

Though he was God at least twice, now that I think about it.

Better post a politics thing to keep stuff on track.

Played holdem at the casino the other day. The average old white man in the south is still just like you would expect him to be. They complained about Pelosi, they complained about Schumer, and then they reached back to President Obama to complain about when things first began to go wrong.

Wish I could say I took some money off of them as punishment, but I lost. Maybe next Saturday.

Was traveling around the conservosphere earlier and ran across a post with pictures of the Obamas that said something along the lines of “racism was nearly dead in America until these two showed up and stirred the pot”. This is how these people actually think.

an improvement of sorts...at triple the normal cost.  'unaccompanied minor' situation is getting downright insane....

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/biden-administration-converts-oil-field-man-camp-into-shelter-for-migrant-children/ar-BB1g1MUU?ocid=ob-fb-enus-580&fbclid=IwAR1iFDCPAyqual5GoySZJ7gzB0rc-rm3HHGehPV7V5Tyjyvb-NDEjns5Ry0

Faced with thousands of children arriving at the Southwest border without a parent or guardian, the Biden administration has rushed to find places to house them. The Department of Health and Human Services this week had more than 21,000 children in its care – a record.

The number of children arriving alone at the border has outstripped the ability of HHS’ state-licensed shelters to house them, and the agency has resorted to pricier, less regulated temporary sites in Texas and elsewhere to pull the kids out of Border Patrol custody, where advocates say conditions are overcrowded and far from ideal.

---

U.S. Border Patrol apprehended more than 5,600 unaccompanied children in January. The number grew to more than 9,200 in February, then swelled again to more than 18,600 children in March – a record for apprehensions of unaccompanied children in a single month.

HHS is tasked with sheltering unaccompanied minors and connecting them to a sponsor in the U.S., most often a parent. The 13,500 beds in its network of permanent, state-licensed shelters are essentially exhausted.

---

Last week, ABC News reported that HHS abruptly canceled a $4 million contract for an "emergency intake" site with a Houston-based disaster services agency after allegations surfaced that unaccompanied girls were required to stay at their cots day and night; some were allegedly asked to relieve themselves into plastic bags for lack of staff to accompany them to the bathroom, according to the report.

---

HHS is paying about $775 per night per child at "emergency intake" sites, versus about $260 per night per child at permanent shelters, according to U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, who serves on the House appropriations committee.

Around 2014 there was this troglodyte trying to push the "Michelle Obama is a racist" smear at work. It was making its way through right-wing radio at the time. I'm not sure why he didn't realize how batshit-crazy this made him sound, especially to someone who is not credulously hanging on every word of right-wing talk show hosts. Sure the Clinton smears worked really well, and so did the smears on President Obama to a degree, but attacking a highly popular First Lady with very flimsy evidence really destroys your credibility very quickly.
