Excellent. Watling is in this side. I like seeing that man bat.

His last series! Hopefully we see some vintage BJ innings in this series.

The Lord's pitch is looking flat AF, as it often does. Won't be easy to take 20 wickets here.

I've been so disconnected from it all. Had no idea he was 35.

Also, not playing a spinner besides Root? Odd.

Yes, interesting selection. I think NZ being loaded with left handed batsmen might have played a role in Leach’s omission.

Also worth noting that Ed Smith was dumped as selector and he was not a fan of playing Broad and Anderson in the same XI...now they are back in action together but it does make for a samey attack without Archer or a spin option.

ETA: What a day for Conway. Batted all day on debut at Lord's for an unbeaten ton! Not sure you could script that much better.

I've never been a fan of not playing a specialist spinner, especially when the weather has turned hot and dry over the past few days after a very wet May.

It was impressive from Conway, he looked very organised as an opener.

Out of the other players making their debut I thought Ollie Robinson had a decent opening day.

Not great timing for his old tweets to resurface though...you know you've got a problem when your press statement reads: "I want to make it clear that I’m not racist and I’m not sexist."

Agree with Conway. Very uncomplicated technique. Good temperament. I am not sure when he qualified to play for NZ, but his First Class record is pretty damn good too and could have perhaps justified an earlier selection.

Yeah. Playing zero spinners makes little sense to me. Leach is no part timer, he is good enough to get wickets on this surface, imo.

And yeah, saw those Robinson tweets. Can't say I particularly want him to succeed after seeing them. He was young & he has apologized ( Even though I think the apology could have been better).

Bit sad to read those & then the stuff from Overton a while back. Sad, but predictable.

oh hell yes cricket is back for me. And given the timing I can actually watch the whole day, even if those first few overs are definitely on the early side for me.

Anyway, England looking really dozy this morning -- only Anderson is showing any kind of life.

Back to the Denly days for England...two down for not many. Root will need to fill his boots to dig England out of this.

ETA: Enjoyed watching Southee operate in that mini-session. He is good enough to cancel out Anderson in this series if he is at his best.

Wait a minute for 5! Double hundred on debut test!? Conway late recognized talent. Never too late though.

I don't think he was overly late in being recognized - it's just the way things are for some migrant players. He only became eligible to play for NZ in August 2020.

And let's not forget that Wagner, Watling and de Grandhomme were all born in SA or Zim, but I think they all migrated to NZ much earlier than Conway.

Happy Pride Month...

Katherine Brunt, Nat Sciver, Amy Satterthwaite, Lea Tahuhu, Lizelle Lee, Megan Schutt

Oh and boys had it more difficult. Faulkner and Stoinis

Lol there is Davies on the men's side! Our one and only.

Let's not go down the Stoinis/Zampa shipping path...

As usual, Root to the rescue. This test is about even stevens? Maybe just a slight advantage to NZ but they will want to get these batsmen in the first session tomorrow.

Yeah, pretty even I think. New Zealand are in a solid position but I'd say 378 is probably slightly disappointing given one of their openers got 200. On the other hand you'd think England are even more reliant on Root here than normal.

I hadn't seen that when I made the previous post but the day definitely took a turn for the worse for him, although he's only got himself to blame for that.

Seems Conway beat Ganguly's (the idiot heading BCCI/IPL the cash cow) record for highest debut score at Lord's. '96. 131/133 IIRC

He later beat the highest debut score playing in England, beating Ranjisithi.

He definitely didn't look much like a player in his first Test. Averaging 75 and 59 in ODIs and T20Is is also an impressive start in those formats.

I think before play started you might have thought 400 was about par for the first innings so I agree New Zealand will be disappointed, particularly after how well the first day went. Still a lot of work for the inexperience England batting line-up to get up to that total, although they've made a decent recovery after losing the two early wickets.
