Cricket 41: "Test World Cup equivalent, purists and noobs (like me)!"

- The whole narrative of Silverwood/Giles/Root banding together to focus on tests and win back the Ashes is poppycock. Nothing I've seen since the Sri Lanka tour indicates that England will challenge Australia for the Ashes. 5-0 Australia (?)

You're not fooling anyone with your blatant attempt to curse Australia

Australia isn't as good as Kiwis at the moment. So two shit teams going at it could be good!

Columnists now calling for Joe Root’s head, pointing out that since 2017, he’s averaging 33 in home Tests, the seventh best average, while also opining that he’s the fifth best captain in the wider squad after Buttler, Stokes, Burns, and Broad. Personally, if he was willing to do it short term, I’d replace him with Morgan.

Absorbing (and rare!) women's test match unfolding at Bristol between England and India. England were looking strong at 3-236 before India's spinners caused a mini-collapse.

Will be interesting to see how India's batters fare, especially Raj who has the best test batting record of any current player other than Perry.

@Hereward The powers-that-be seem to love giving Morgan his best XI every time, so perhaps that would instantly solve the selection issue!

It did feel like Morgan had potential as a test player that he never realised (although I think he's still got a higher test average than some of the current team).

England do seem to tend to pick their captains based on whoever they think the best batsman is regardless of their aptitude for captaincy. I think Buttler could well be a better captain than Root. I would be slightly nervous about the prospects of giving it to Ben Stokes since he seems to do every other job in the team already and maybe doesn't need more to think about.

Women's cricket does need a longer longer format schedule every year

Plus I saw that 2014 test, wonderful

Windies v SA is back on at least.

This is probably one of the most lopsided series I've ever seen in terms of quality - both teams have fantastic bowling attacks and would probably be able to roll most international batting line-ups. Windies look to have made a great find with the 19-year old Seales.

But batting wise...oh dear. Windies have even had to resort to Kieran Powell, a 41-test player who averages 27 as a specialist batsman(!) Ramprakash-esque!

Two fifties on test debut for the 17 year-old Verma, easily outperforming her more experienced teammates and giving India a chance of saving the test tomorrow. Great story.

Shefali Smriti and Mithali. That order

SA were in a bit of trouble at 124/4 but Elgar and de Kock managed to steady the ship. Our batting lineup is totally wank though. Against the top tier Test sides (NZ, India, England, Australia) this lineup would seriously struggle to get 150.

I do think that Markram, Elgar and De Kock are a decent skeleton of a batting line-up though. They just need AB and Du Plessis back in the side!

I assume Bavuma’s test run is over despite being made ODI captain? It’s a shame he struggled to make the step up in tests, I enjoyed his fielding and plucky batting.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bavuma makes a quick return to the Test lineup. Batting talent in SA is at an all time low. The ship has sailed on Faf and AB. Faf is done with Tests but has made himself available for white ball cricket whereas Boucher has spoken to AB about a return but he has no interest in returning to the international fold.

Meanwhile England are running rampant in Bristol. Another collapse from India’s batters.

ETA: It’s kinda funny that several different test teams are at such a low ebb with test batting. SA, Windies, Aus, England, SL, Pakistan are all struggling to produce high quality batsmen compared to previous generations. I guess it’s a perfect storm of T20, DRS and a lack of FC cricket. Plus some very handy bowling attacks and spicier pitches.
