Cricket 41: "Test World Cup equivalent, purists and noobs (like me)!"

Nice series win for Bangladesh against an admittedly undermanned Australia. But I’m sure they’d still take that, as their record against Australia in all formats is quite poor. It’s a good confidence booster.

Australia are very long odds in this upcoming World Cup. I’m expecting England, India or Windies to win. South Africa and Pakistan smokies.

It looks like Moeen Ali will be back for the next Test which is good to see and should bring a bit more balance to the England team, even if I'm a bit sorry for Jack Leach who hasn't done anything wrong but apparently there's no place for a specialist spinner. It might be tough for Moeen given how little red ball cricket he's played in the last year but hopefully he puts in a decent performance.

Shock horror...England got through 90 overs in a day!

Another difficult day for England after winning the toss and fielding. Pujara's lack of form will be a concern, but otherwise that was a near perfect day for India.

Over in Jamaica...Pakistan are predictably struggling so far with the bat.

England are pretty stuffed I think. It’ll be a shock if India don’t get a big total from here and England don’t seem likely to put in a resolute performance batting last.

Oh well, it should be interesting to see how Hameed does anyway.

I think it's the usual story - if Root fires then England could still be competitive and draw the match.

But if not...

On selection matters, I am fine with India's horses/courses mentality and think they are doing the right thing in playing the one spinner. I'd probably favour Ashwin over Jadeja, but it's hard to argue against the latter these days.

But England have this completely wrong. I know England have zero faith in their top order, but I just don't think you can justify playing Curran if he's going to bat 8 and offer little penetration with the ball. Every time Wood and Curran came on to bowl today, you could see the batting side visibly relax. Ali is a good selection while Stokes is out but, in a perfect world, I'd be selecting Leach in front of him.

When Root won the toss today and bowled, basically his only chance of success was if Robinson and Anderson knocked over the openers early. After that failed...there was really nothing there for England.

India's openers definitely showed England's how to construct an innings in conditions that probably helped the bowlers a bit. It will take a lot of hard work for England to get back into this game.

Great comeback from England this morning, getting KL early and restricting Pant and Jadeja. Normal service resumed with India’s tail not wagging.

I think this will probably be a high scoring draw if Root gets going today.

So, er, yeah, that didn't go too well for Hameed.

I think Sibley's done. What's the point of him in the team at this stage? He's not getting picked on potential or ability, he's getting picked on the back of scoring lots of first class runs and he's in the team to score runs. If he's not doing that and to cap it off getting out twice like that in quick succession why's he there?

So Root is still in…England in with a shout. If Burns had been there are at close that would’ve been even better.

I think it’s time for Sibley to go too. It’s good that England have tried to give him a proper go based on weight of County runs, but eventually you just have to concede that he’s not up to test standard.
