Swan Song part 14/16. The Perfumed Seneschal and the Mummer's Dragon

Majority of ASOIAF’s readers agree that the Mummer’s Dragon is Young Griff, in the fandom most frequently called fAegon (because majority also believe that he is a Blackfyre not the real Aegon Targaryen and thus a fake).

Let’s make some things clear for starters.

Both fAegon and Varys are Blackfyres, otherwise Golden Company wouldn’t have supported either of them. Varys is not in pro-Targaryen faction and never was. All those years ago he came to Westeros with a single purpose - to weaken the 7K from within and to make it easier for the Golden Company to invade. To accomplish that mission he was trying to clash King Aerys against Rhaegar, to start a civil war between their supporters. Though Robert’s Rebellion had ruined all the work that he had done, because in the span of it and afterwards five out of the seven Kingdoms got united thru marriages and thus the situation after the war became very unfavorable for the invasion. Elia wasn’t stupid, she hadn’t known who Varys really was, but what she had known is that he definitely wasn’t Rhaegar’s friend, and thus there’s no way in hell that Elia would have trusted her child to Varys. Even if Elia for some unknown reason decided to switch her son with another baby, she wouldn’t have asked Varys’ help to do that. Also, whatever Varys is doing, his claims that he does it for the realm is a lie. If he really cared about the people of the 7K then he would have prevented the War of the Five Kings. He was able to get Tyrion out of the Black Cells, so he could have done the same for Ned. If Dontos Hollard was able to take Sansa out of the Red Keep, then one of Varys’ agents also could have done it. If he was able to get to Pycelle to kill him, then he also would have been able to kidnap him and to put him on the same ship as Ned, and whisked all of them to Dragonstone. With the information that those two knew concerning Cersei’s children and Jon Arryn’s death, they would have provided enough evidence against Lannisters. If Ned and Stannis summoned the Lords of the 7K for the Great Council and provided them with that information, then Stannis and not Joffrey would have been crowned as the King of the 7K. And thus the civil war would have been avoided. So the question is - if Varys was able to prevent it, then why hadn’t he? And the answer is obvious - for the same reason he killed Kevan - while the 7K are weakened and separated, it will be easier for the Golden Company to invade Westeros and to put fAegon on the Iron Throne.

Thus, after this long preamble we finally got to the real topic of this thread. The previous three parts of the “Swan Song” were about the heroes of ASOIAF, those three characters who are destined to become the Saviors, as a parallel to the Biblical Messiah. This thread is about their adversaries - the villains of ASOIAF.

The Red Dragon or The Mummer

In Revelation 12 (which is a part of the Bible) the Woman Clothed with the Sun was pursued by the Great Red Dragon (Satan) who wanted to devour her child as soon as it will be born. The Woman gave birth to a male child who was destined to rule all nations of the world. Then the Child was taken to Heaven to the God’s throne, and the Woman fled from the Dragon into the wilderness. Then a war broke out in heaven between Michael and his angels against the Dragon and his angels. The Dragon was defeated and together with his angels was cast to the earth. He continued to persecute the Woman, but she was given a great eagle’s wings and again escaped from the Dragon. Then the Dragon went to make war with the Woman’s offspring.

These fragments of the Bible seem to be a basis on which GRRM had build Dany’s arc in late AGOT and early ACOK - Rhaego’s birth and subsequent journey of Dany’s khalasar thru the Red Waste (the wilderness). Targaryens are black dragons and Blackfyres are red dragons, thus Varys, who is a Blackfyre, is a parallel to the Red Dragon from the Revelation. Also he is the Mummer, the great puppeteer and the shadow player in the games of thrones, the one who will give Iron Throne to his marionette - fAegon, the Mummer’s Dragon.

The Beast from the Sea

In Revelation 13 out of the sea appeared a Beast. It had seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns. The Red Dragon gave to this Beast his power, his throne, and great authority.

In ASOIAF this seven-headed Beast is the Golden Company. The Beast had ten horns, thus out of its seven heads five of them were horned and crowned, and two heads had no horns. GRRM’s dragons have horns, thus the five horned heads are those leaders of the GC who were dragonseeds - Aegor Bittersteel Rivers, Haegon I Blackfyre, Daemon III Blackfyre, Daemon the Unnumbered and Maelys the Monstrous, while the two hornless heads are those captain-generals who were not dragonseeds - Myles Toyne and Harry Strickland.

Mortally Wounded Head

Quote

“I must admit, you have noble features for a dead boy.”

The boy flushed. “I am not dead.

“How not? My lord father wrapped your corpse in a crimson cloak and laid you down beside your sister at the foot of the Iron Throne, his gift to the new king. Those who had the stomach to lift the cloak said that half your head was gone.” - ADWD, Tyrion V.

The real Aegon Targaryen was killed by the Mountain. Though if fAegon will convince people of the 7K that he is that Aegon, then his return to the 7K will be seen by its people as a miracle.

Quote

One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast. - Revelation 13, 3-4.

Seems that fAegon is a parallel to the Biblical Antichrist. The Beast’s number is 666. fAegon is going to be crowned as Aegon VI Targaryen. The current invasion of the GC into Westeros is the Sixth Rebellion of Blackfyres. And fAegon is the sixth dragonseed-leader of the GC.

Quote

A cloth dragon swayed on poles amidst a cheering crowd. - ACOK, Dany IV.

People of the 7K will believe that fAegon is Rhaegar’s son and they will welcome him as their King.

Quote

The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits.  They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction. - Revelation 17, 9-11.

The Bible is a complicated book and GRRM’s interpretation of it is even more complex. Thus, the five “kings” that have fallen are fAegon’s predecessors, five captain-generals of the GC, those that were dragonseeds. Varys is the one who once was (a Blackfyre), and now is not (because now he’s a eunuch and thus a dead-end for the Blackfyre family-line), the one who is an eight “king” and the eight head of the seven-headed Beast. He is a Blackfyre by blood, but he isn’t accepted by the Golden Company as their ruler, because of his inferiority. That’s why Golden Company is a seven-headed Beast and Varys is its eight head that is separated from the other seven, and fAegon is the one who will come later to rule for only a little while, when Varys/Red Dragon will give him an authority and his throne.

The Mummer’s Dragon

Quote

The puppeteer’s stall had been knocked on its side. The fat Dornishwoman was on the ground weeping. One man-at-arms was dangling the puppets of Florian and Jonquil from his hands as another set them afire with a torch. Three more men were opening chests, spilling more puppets on the ground and stamping on them. The dragon puppet was scattered all about them, a broken wing here, its head there, its tail in three pieces. - THK.

In my opinion this scene is a foreshadowing of fAegon’s death. If what happened to the mummer’s dragon in THK describes the manner of fAegon’s death, then he also will be ripped or cut apart, same as that toy-dragon. The only single person who is physically capable of reaping a human apart is Gregor Clegane the Mountain , who is also Undead Robert Strong and one of Duncan the Tall’s descendants. One of Gregor’s relatives, Maelys the Monstrous, killed his cousin, Daemon the Unnumbered, by ripping off his head. It will be very much in GRRM’s style if fAegon will be killed by the Mountain, same as the real Aegon.

Besides fAegon’s fate, could be that the scene from THK also foreshadows what will happen to Arianne Martell (the fat Dornishwoman weeping on the ground - pregnant Arianne, crying because the Mountain killed the father of her unborn child), Barristan Selmy and Jeyne Swann (fAegon’s parents, who are parallels to Florian the Fool and Lady Jonquil, possibly they will burn together after their son’s death).

Florian the Fool & Lady Jonquil

Quote

This morning the puppeteers were doing the tale of Florian and Jonquil. The fat Dornishwoman was working Florian in his armor made of motley, while the tall girl held Jonquil’s strings. “You are no knight,” she was saying as the puppet’s mouth moved up and down. “I know you. You are Florian the Fool.”

“I am, my lady,” the other puppet answered, kneeling. “As great a fool as ever lived, and as great a knight as well.”

“A fool and a knight?” said Jonquil. “I have never heard of such a thing.”

“Sweet lady,” said Florian, “all men are fools, and all men are knights, where women are concerned.”

It was a good show, sad and sweet both, with a sprightly swordfight at the end, and a nicely painted giant. - THK.

The swordfight at the end and the painted giant is a foreshadowing of a trial by combat between fAegon and the Mountain. And Barristan, probably, also will get involved, unwilling to let his son be killed by a monster.

Florian’s armor was made of motley. It’s a seven-colored armor, because of this hint - “She pulled a chair close to the hearth, took down one of her favorite books, and lost herself in the stories of Florian and Jonquil, of Lady Shella and the Rainbow Knight” (AGOT, Sansa IV). It’s a foreshadowing that Barristan Selmy, who is the greatest knight of the 7K, will serve to seven monarchs - Aegon V, Jaehaerys II, Aerys II, Robert Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, Daenerys Targaryen, and the last one will be either Aegon VI (Barristan’s son) or Aegon VII (the true King of the 7K, Jon Snow).

Barristan is a fool because he got tricked by his Jonquil - Lady Jeyne.

The Perfumed Seneschal

Quote

“Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun’s son and the mummer’s dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal.” - ADWD, Dany II.

[Seneschal is the steward or major-domo of a medieval great house.]

In ADWD Tyrion (the lion) and Jorah went on board of the ship named Selaesori Qhoran, which means Fragrant Steward.

Quote

“Did you truly expect me to believe you were about the queen’s business in that whorehouse? Defending her from half a world away? Or could it be that you were running, that your dragon queen sent you from her side? But why would she … oh, wait, you were spying on her.” Tyrion made a clucking sound. “You hope to buy your way back into her favor by presenting her with me. An ill-considered scheme, I’d say. One might even say an act of drunken desperation. Perhaps if I were Jaime … but Jaime killed her father, I only killed my own. You think Daenerys will execute me and pardon you, but the reverse is just as likely. Maybe you should hop up on that pig, Ser Jorah. Put on a suit of iron motley, like Florian the –” - ADWD, Tyrion IX.

It’s a peculiar coincidence that Jorah and Tyrion met at a brothel, and while they were on board of a ship named Fragrant Steward, Tyrion mentioned in the same conversation both the place where they have met and Florian the Fool, who was Lady Jonquil’s knight. In ancient Rome and Medieval France jonquil oil was used as a principal ingredient for making perfumes. And in ASOIAF the man and the woman who are parallels to Florian and Jonquil - Barristan Selmy and Jeyne Swann - both are descendants of Johanna Swann, a famous courtesan who served at the Perfumed Garden, a pleasure house (brothel) owned by Lysandro Rogare.

In her warning Quaithe specifically singled out the Perfumed Seneschal, that’s because this person is the most dangerous out of all of them.

Dany’s son, Rhaego, is a parallel to the Biblical Messiahs - Jesus and the King of kings, and Dany is a parallel to Mother Mary and the Woman Clothed with the Sun. On many icons Mary is portrayed with a halo of either twelve stars around her head or a crown of twelve flowers - daffodils, which is called Mary’s Star or Star of the Sea (Stella Maris in Latin).

Daffodil, narcissus and jonquil are yellow-white flowers that belong to the same genus (family). Thus it seems fitting if the Mother of ASOIAF’s Messiah and the Mother of ASOIAF’s Antichrist are also from the same family like daffodils and jonquils.

Jeyne Swann (Septa Lemore) - the Perfumed Seneschal - is Dany’s greatest rival and her most dangerous opponent because she’s a mother and she wants Iron Throne for her son - the Mummer’s Dragon.

There are multiple parallels between ASOIAF and the Bible, and many of GRRM's characters and the events that took place in his books seems to be based on specific Biblical elements. Varys - the Red Dragon/Satan, fAegon - Antichrist, Golden Company - the Beast out of the Sea, Petyr Baelish - the False Prophet, Cersei - the Great Harlot/Babylonian Whore, Euron - Scarlet Beast, etc.

The return of the Others, the Dead rising - it's a parallel to the Biblical Apocalypse (the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War on the red horse / Khal Drogo; Conquest on the white horse / Dany; Death on the pale horse / pale mare; Famine (hunger) on the black horse / Sandor Clegane had a big black horse named Stranger, so maybe the Hound is GRRM's parallel to the Famine-rider).

So it's likely that GRRM in the remaining two books for fAegon and his other Bible-based characters will be writing plot-lines that are similar to what happened to their counterparts in the Bible. The Biblical Kings of the South and the North, mentioned in Daniel 11 -

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Daniel+11&version=NIV

seems to be GRRM's basis for Doran Martell and Stannis Baratheon / and / or fAegon (who can also be perceived as the Northern King, because he will arrive to Stormlands, and will begin his conquest from there, in northern direction from Dorne and Doran/the King of the South). So Doran will make an alliance with fAegon, thru marriage with Arianne, but they both will be betrayed, possibly by Gerold Dayne.

Quote

The king of the South will become strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger than he and will rule his own kingdom with great power. After some years, they will become allies. The daughter of the king of the South will go to the king of the North to make an alliance, but she will not retain her power, and he and his power will not last. In those days she will be betrayed, together with her royal escort and her father and the one who supported her. - Daniel 11:5-6.

And this (along with the False Prophet part from the Revelation) seems to be the basis for Petyr Baelish:

Quote

He will be succeeded by a contemptible person who has not been given the honor of royalty. He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue. Then an overwhelming army will be swept away before him; both it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed. After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully, and with only a few people he will rise to power. When the richest provinces feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot and wealth among his followers. He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but only for a time. - Daniel 11:21-24.

But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him. - Daniel 11:44-45.

It seems that the First Long Night and Azor Ahai are parallels to the first battle between angels and Satan's supporters. Azor Ahai and Lightbringer are parallels to ArchAngel Michael and his flaming sword. On some icons the blade of Michael's sword is depicted in a form of a comet's tail, like here:

https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Archangel-Michael-killing-the-devil-with-a-sword-in-the-shape-of-the-tail-of-the-comet_fig3_285131602

According to the Bible, at the time of the Apocalypse, Michael will return to lead the Army of Heavens against the final enemy. Those elements about the King of the North and King of the Sourth are from Daniel 11, and this part about Michael and The End of the World is from Daniel 12:

Quote

At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. - Daniel, 12:1-3.

Thus Petyr Baelish, who will outlive both fAegon and Doran, will be defeated by Azor Ahai Reborn (a parallel to Archangel Michael) - Jon Snow (King Aegon VII Targaryen), who is also a parallel to the Biblical Heavenly Warrior from the Revelation, and the Lamb of God/Jesus. Or the one who will defeat Littlefinger will be Dany, or rather - her dragons (because Dany is also Azor Ahai Reborn, and her dragons are her weapons).
