Formula 1 2020/2021: Shits getting crazier

The porpoising may well be having an effect but it's gotta be a concern that all of the Mercedes powered teams have underperformed and look slow in the speed traps- and they're not allowed to really tinker with the engine this season at all, right?

They are saying that the Mercedes engine issue is that it may have something to do with the new fuel. They basically admitted as much about a month ago. If that is the case, the freeze on performance development of the PU will be an problem.

However, it is probable that they have left themselves flexibility in other areas to adjust for expected performance issues over the course of the season. Perhaps not enough to makeup speed along the straights, but probably in corners they can gain time.

So the Mercedes engines have no power and the Red Bull engines start cooking themselves after three quarters of a race.

Ferrari gonna be drooling at that.

Might take some time to get used to these new tyres too... Hamilton nearly spinning after his first pitstop was something.

The cars look so slick, vamos!!!

Some of them do look spectacular, particularly under the lights.

I think that was probably most of what we could have wanted from a first race, some fairly close racing and a genuine battle for the lead, particularly for the laps where Le Clerc and Verstappen passed and re-passed each other. Ideally the other teams could be a bit closer in pace to Red Bull/Ferrari, I think maybe the gap wasn't quite as big as it seemed in qualifying but it still looks like it might be difficult for a driver from another team to get in amongst them without reliability issues or unusual race conditions.

It's a pity about the late reliability disasters for Red Bull which scuppered any chance of a further contest in the final laps, hopefully they can sort that out in future. Definitely the perfect start for the Ferraris.

Yup, solid opening and good news for Haas as well. Mercedes are off the pace, but maybe not quite as disastrously as first believed, and Alfa seemed tasty as well.

That reliability issue is going to be a headache for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri.

Apparently the team principals and the F1 teams confirmed they were happy for the race to go ahead despite, y'know, being in an active warzone.

They were then dragged back into a meeting with the drivers, who were very much not happy and proceeded to let them know over the next two hours. Still some reports that some drivers want the event called off.

Fucking hell. Apparently Domenicali and Brawn went into the driver's meeting to convince them to race and after twenty minutes or so left looking quite pissed off. And the meeting is still going on.

They're probably grateful Vettel isn't there because then there wouldn't be a debate, they wouldn't be racing.

ETA: All ten team principals traipsed into the meeting and apparently tried to convince the drivers to race and were then stopped by Hamilton and Alonso who outlined the drivers' concerns to them very volubly for several minutes straight, after which the principals traipsed out looking a bit abashed and went straight to Race Control.

The journos seem divided, some thinking the race is off, others that it will continue "under severe protest" from at least several drivers.

ETA2: Apparently the drivers' meeting has turned into a formal meeting of the GDPA union, and both the reserve drivers and drivers not at the track (including Vettel) have been looped in. The union will, in no uncertain terms, be telling them not to race.

ETA3: The meeting broke up after 4 hours and 20 minutes. The other drivers left by a back entrance, George Russell, acting in his role as GDPA spokesman (Vettel is the other one but is not present due to COVID), has gone to race control to tell the principals and FIA what the drivers have decided.

ETA4: Current situation seems to be that several drivers argued vociferously not to race, several were keen to race and several were undecided. They were unable to get a majority decision, so at the moment they are defaulting to racing. Several drivers clearly very unhappy.

Hamilton out on Q1, that's not ideal.

Then we've had a red flag pause in Q2, after Mich Schumacher slammed himself into a wall out of a corner, where there was no tyre barrier and he went down the wall for quite a while. Concsious and in the ambulance, after about five minutes, but the car just disintegrated when they lifted it with the crane, so a hell of an impact.

It's such a stupid circuit. Even if Saudi Arabia wasn't a humanitarian and security nightmare they shouldn't be racing here, it's bad and it's dangerous.

Here's the crash.  Look how far down the circuit he bounces!

I wouldn't be surprised if the drivers and the union got together with F1 and told them they should cancel the Saudi contract. Between the danger of the track, the fact that Saudi Arabia is in a war that shows no signs of ending soon and the human rights abuses, it's not really tenable to carry on there (even moreso than Bahrain and Qatar).

Solid race. Looks like it might be nip and tuck between Verstappen and Leclerc for a while. Hopefully they can maintain the development race throughout the season. Bad luck for Perez though, who was set for a great win before the safety car balls-up.
