Videogames Killed the TV Star

Recommended Posts

My reaction to KotOR remake news is pretty much "meh" at this point. I've beaten the game three times, seen all it has to offer, and the last couple of Disney movies have pretty much killed my interest in Star Wars as a franchise.

I'm holding out for a Deus Ex 1 remake. Now that's something I would buy.

The original KOTOR and its sequel reignited my enthusiasm for Star Wars at a time when the prequels were diminishing it. It showed the possibilities of the Star Wars universe in the hands of storytellers who loved it and were interested in developing the lore.

The only Star Wars material that has given me as much enjoyment since is The Mandalorian.

I hope the remake is an actual 'remake' and not just a remaster. I see a lot of potential in a KOTOR with more cinematic storytelling.

I don't know how Sony managed to get it as a launch exclusive but well played to them.

Very excited for KOTOR remake, since I've only partially played it, and not all that far. I hope it does well enough to earn a remake for KOTOR2.

Could it be argued that KOTOR 1 and 2 are the best Star Wars media properties of all time, including the original movie trilogy, or will be if they get prettied up similar to how prettied up FFVII remake is compared to FFVII and the remake(s) remain true to the originals? Bit of a stretch I guess since A New Hope and Empire are legit good movies, but they may well play second fiddle only to those two. I do have to give honorable mention to the clone wars TV series, I really enjoyed that.

I do love how "Thanos" is playing Thor in God of War Ragnarok. That trailer looked good, and I think/hope that it being Atreus' story should make for an interesting story.

I've played through KOTOR so many times that I was able to get through it , start to finish, in a single sitting.  Only reason I got an Xbox back in 2005 - and I still have both and have fired them up a few times over the years.  I hope it gets the FF7 treatment and we see tweaks/twists to the original story with a more modern gameplay, but without the multiple games cash grab.  Not sure if it will be a "day 1" purchase given how much I played the original, but I'll get it eventually.

I decided to start up Path of Exile, which was free last month, and can't believe I missed this one.  The only thing I wish for is some way to aim your character better - though I haven't had time yet to look online for console range tips.  It really feels like an enhanced (and more complex) Diablo 2.  Gonna dive into the single player a bit before dabbling in co-op, but my first impressions are great.  Only complaint I have so far is that when my console went into rest mode I lost all my progress - glad I found that out during the tutorial mission.  I can already tell my wife is going to hate this one, lol

Hmm...the KOTOR remake is being written by Sam Maggs, who has a history of trolling male Star Wars fans, and once answered a "what's your favorite Star Wars game" question with "Not KOTOR". :(

This has really ruined the announcement for me. Why out of all the passionate Star Wars fans who would have done a project like this for free, did they choose to give it to someone who appears to dislike the Star Wars fanbase?

Oh no! One of dem SJWs is writing the game instead of passionate racist and sexist Star Wars fan. What a tragedy.

Edit: looked at her Twitter. What damning evidence that she hates Star Wars and KOTOR:

Well she seems to think that the Last Jedi is the best SW movie of all time.. that if anything should disqualify her from ever being allowed to write anything until she's had a big think about things, and she definitely shouldn't be let near KOTOR.

Time will tell whether the Sith are some obvious metaphor for 'The Patriarchy' and the lead female jedi is fighting against misogynistic battle droids using only the power of her truth to defend herself.

Since I have way too much time on my hands, I went back to look at the original tweet thread. Shockingly, it was a joke thread about how Yoda Stories is the best Star Wars video game of all time. Stop letting clickbait misogynist nerd sites make you outraged about stupid shit using out of context tweets. It's not healthy.

But you know what? Even if KOTOR wasn't her favourite Star Wars game- who cares? If she likes Jedi Outcast or KOTOR II or Super Return of the Jedi or even Yoda Stories* more, that says nothing about whether or not she's qualified to write this game.

But of course, the real issue here is not that she "hates Star Wars", but that she likes Star Wars that right wing outrage mobs hate, like the Last Jedi. Excuse me if I don't care.

*I played a lot of Yoda Stories as a kid...

I don't think George Lucas was woke enough to write an allegory that critiques the patriarchy, especially not in a way that dupes the privileged within the patriarchy to root against the image of themselves.

I think a proper feminist analysis of Star Wars would conclude that the Republic, the Empire and the rebellion are all patriarchies, just of different stripes. So no true feminist would ever want to be involved in a Star Wars production. You won't find many Star Wars super-fans wandering the halls of the humanities departments of liberal universities...although my sister-in-law is somewhat a Star Wars and she wanders the halls of the humanities department of a liberal university, but a super-fan she is not. And she has never played, much less loved, a Star Wars video game.

I pulled the trigger and pre-purchased the D2 reboot. It's my favorite game ever afterall.

MFingUrGear will rise again!

You should really try Path of Exile. Pretty sure it’s free on all systems and I’m having a blast with it. It’s pretty much everything I wanted in D3, but didn’t get. Only problem is that you really need a build guide as a noob, as it’s really easy to screw up your character. I really think you’ll like it if D2 is your all time favorite

I would love a great Wolverine game.  I do hate it when they draw his claws so huge like that, though.  Kotor remake might be cool.  I never played the OG but I will check it out.

Cis male nerd-rage needs to be studied -- harnessing that energy could easily break our reliance on fossil fuels. Such energy over the smallest perceived slights. It's really remarkable.

If I haven't already bought one, a KotOR remake would probably spur me to buy a PS5.

I'm finding the run of remakes of RPGs I've loved encouraging, even if I'm not that interested in buying most of them. Just hoping that the wave of nostalgia for BG/Mass Effect/KotOR results in more new games being produced in the same vein. Perhaps I might even live long enough to see a Neverwinter Nights 3!

We've had a whole run of Baldur's Gate successors - some better than others - in just the last seven years or so, including one this week.

KotOR-style successors are much thinner on the ground, with The Outer Worlds being the most recent candidate. I think the issue is that, however ancient they are by modern standards, KotOR, Jade Empire and OG Mass Effect are still 3D worlds which take vastly more resources and money to make than isometric 2D RPGs, even huge ones.

One game crying out for a remake much more is Anachronox, an SF CRPG that preceded KotOR and which KotOR often feels like it borrowed more than a few ideas from. The game is just about playable today, despite using the then-decrepit Quake II engine. The absolutely outstanding script and turn-based combat really helps.

Spoiler

Plus the fact that one of your NPC companion is an entire planet you saved during an earlier mission; the government shrinked the planet down to the size of a beach ball and it floats along with you on your adventures and engages the enemy in battle with its miniature planetary defense battery.

I played it for a bit. It's alright but I think it's way too complicated with far too much clicking, way too many things you need to collect or manage and as a result of all of that, requires microtransactions to either get some quality of life upgrades (new storage tabs that allow for greater organization and stacks) or currency (so you can trade/buy gear to make the builds decent since the drops are pretty terrible in terms of getting upgrades). Between maps, fragments of maps, the atlas, syndicates, temples, beasts, rogue harbor, league mechanics and more, there is just so much going on that keeps getting added over the years that makes the game far too complicated with far too much clicking.

I like The Last Epoch, which is still in early access, but seems to be a simplified, polished version of PoE mixed with Diablo. Really good game so far and can't wait for it to get full release.

If someone asks you what the best (doesn't have to be your favorite) Star Wars movie is and you answer anything other than Empire, I severely distrust your judgment.

If you answer one of the prequels or sequels, then I know you're probably a moron, because all six of those movies were straight trash.  They weren't all trash for the same reasons (the sequels are bad in a very different way than the prequels, for example), but still all trash in their own special ways.

That's a very gatekeepery attitude. I'd also say ESB but there are strong and weak elements in all of the films (maybe the least good moments in Attack of the Clones and then Rise of Skywalker, but they're there) and I can respect people offering up other alternatives (Rogue One and A New Hope have strong arguments behind them as well).

The Last Jedi is easily the most divisive film of the trilogy, mainly because it's the most ambiguous and deconstructionist, but it turns out that's not what Star Wars fans want (despite all the love given to previous Star Wars media that did the same thing, like Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 and Matt Stover's novels). It also wasn't as well-executed as might be wished, and the casino planet subplot and the sidelining of Finn from the film's primary narrative was handled very poorly. But it did actually have the ambition to try to do more than "just more Star Wars" which was The Force Awakens' key weakness (although it did execute it's "standard Star Wars stuff" efficiently). I respect a movie which tries and fails rather than one that phones it in.

There's no such thing as a single person writing a triple A game. Sam Maggs is one of many writers, and is not the lead writer.

@briantw

I feel like someone can legitimately answer A New Hope without receiving opprobrium.
