"Engineering is the art of modelling materials we do not wholly understand, into shapes we cannot precisely analyse so as to withstand forces we cannot properly assess, in such a way that the public has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance."
Dr A.R. Dykes, 1976

NYC portrait painters conversation with Sitting Bull.

Sitting Bull- "Your city is too full of people with too many things, too full of people with not enough things."

Painter-

"You dont like New York city?"

Sitting Bull-

"Your society judges people by the things you have. The Sioux judge people by the things you give away."

The painter commisioned several wagons of foodstuffs and winters supply for the Chiefs tribe. His quote must've left an impression.

"PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.

GANDALF: End? No...the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey-rain curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?

GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.

GANDALF: No, no it isn't.

-- JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Most of my students don't like history / social studies, so I sometimes tell them, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

I saw that quote repeated on a tv show recently.  Unfortunately, the character attributed it to Churchill instead of Santayana.
