Corruption in FIFA and UEFA needs to be properly addressed. Player welfare is a huge problem, for both star players and those in the lower leagues. Player development is improving in most countries but this needs to be done in ways that don't exploit the young players who don't make it in the big academies. Income distribution, financial sustainability, mental health, prejudice in the game. The list goes on and on. The one thing that all of these diverse and urgent issues have in common is that, left to their own devices, the big clubs aren't going to fix a single one of them. Going back to this one. Saw that mini documentary on the academies of the 36 academies of the German top two tier clubs. It's pretty grim. Assuming most boarders won't pick up the German language for it, I'll give a few highlights (or lowlights?). - Youth players are lured into the acadmies with the promise of making it into the Bundesliga. Realistially, that's 1 in 1.000 who make it to that level. Fair and realistic promise for a newcomer to the clubs academy would be. Hi, nice to meet you. We are happy you want to try out here, but realistically, you are probably out of our academy in 2-3 years. - 25% of the youth players in those acadamies get switched out each year. (check above) - Kids that get wheated out, do not get much of a feedback. They had young dude there, who captained quite a few of Wolfsburg's junior teams, and was also lured in there with the hopes of a Bundesliga career, and he was told a one or two games before the end of the season, that he is out. (No further explanation after 7 years). Which is objectively shitty behaviour. He had basically sacrificed his youth, he spent more time at the club than with his actual family, so he felt like that club was sorta family to him. He had offers from other Bundesliga clubs to join their academies, but he said (quite understandbly if you ask me), that he is done with football. - German Football league requirement for those academies is pyschological assistance for the kids to deal with the pressure and media interest and stuff. Bare minimum requirement is one psychologist working full time, that's what most of those clubs do. Hire one psychologist for the entire youth set up. - the kids get subjected to all kinds of abuse and humiliation. Racism being one of them. Otherwise getting screamed down in front of the entire team, You are playing absolute shit, what the fuck do you think you are doing there. Or stop running around like a fucking faggot. - the coaches in the academies are themselves poor SOBs. They work full time for less than 500 € a month. So not just the kids gets exploitated there. - demands by a former Hannover youth coach. He had his players stand in front of the Bayern dressing room at a tournament (they were both competing there) moonlighting. And he took a picture of it (he denies it, but it was sent from his cell phone). Oh yeah, he also had his team urinate into the bags of the Bayern players. - they also touched on the racism scandal in the Bayern academy (mentioned it in one of the previous threads). Basically Bayern's way of dealing with it, was very Trumpian. After they had to let go off the coach in question and a few of his closest confidants, they started to look for the leakers in the coaching staff to kick them out, too. And they were not particularly discrete about it. The coach that was involved the original scandal, that was almost hired by Nürnberg (if it were not for parents and fans protesting, and the club backing down) has found a new job. At the youth set up of another club (I think it was Ulm), which has a partnership with Bayern. Yes, the big club's developing and nurturing talents and as the true guardians of the game.
