I'd imagine they noticed- they just didn't say it on their shows before coz, well, they're a light entertainment team for very mass consumption who don't as a rule go into political commentary, depending on how generous you are either because they want their show to be escapist or because they don't want to alienate half their audience by saying things they don't want to here (or probably a mix of both).

That they've decided they wouldn't alienate half their audience by doing it now says a lot.

Yes. The Daily Mash’s spoof article on the subject placed the pair just below the queen where political neutrality is concerned.

Will be interesting to see if it garners any complaints.
