Which kingdom has the best military record ?

Recommended Posts

Of all the many kingdoms of Westeros which one overall has the best record when it comes to military history, taking in account the number of battles and wars fought, the win/defeat ratio, the amount of casualties and destruction through history, and the impressiveness of the kingdom's greatest victories and the quality of its leaders and the numbers and gravity of its defeats ?

The Reach.

It can single handed challenge 2 to 3 other regions by themselfs.

They’ve lost their share of battles, though. The continued existence of those other kingdoms is proof of that. The Stormlands and Dorne both endured for thousands of years despite being much smaller in land size and population. And we know that the Reach tried to conquer both of them.

I forgot to answer the question.

And honestly, I think it’s the Vale. They’ve almost never been on the losing side of any war, and half the time, they don’t even have to bother fighting. The biggest achievement in war is to win without having to fight at all, and the Vale excels at that. Not even Dorne or the North as good at it, since Dorne still gets ravaged and the North is easily invaded along its coasts. The Vale is like a huge naturally built fortress which only dragons could penetrate without difficulty.

True, but they also beat a three side invasion fron Stormlands, Westerlands and Dorne.

Neither other region was able to conquer the other, is not fair to hold it against them.

Pre-Targaryen, the Ironborn were strong under Harren. It took the might of Balerion to end his rule and break the Ironborn. History will repeat and Queen Daenerys Targaryen will break the Ironborn again. The Ironborn will terrorize the South for a time until the rightful Targaryen ruler, Daenerys, puts the hurt on them. This time, the Ironborn won’t get a free pass like they did with Robert.

To answer your question, though it is not the answer you probably want, the Ironborn were the strongest before the Targaryens came and built Westeros into one realm.

I disagree. The Ironborn lost as much as they gained. They've also been invaded and temporarily conquered at least twice during their history. And sure, they did conquer the Riverlands from the Storm Kings, but they only managed to do that with help from the riverlords before subjecting them all over again. And even then, the Ironborn couldn't conquer the Stormlands or the Vale. They attacked the Bloody Gate multiple times.

I agree with Claude, personally; the Vale is the strongest kingdom overall; it's got the best defences, and their knights are renowned.

Black Harren and his Ironborn worried even Argillac. While the Vale is in a strong defensive position, they do not have the might to go to war and win against the Ironborn of Harren’s peak.

Knights of renown cannot make up for Harren’s military might and Harrenhal’s strength. Knights of renown make up a small portion of armies in Westeros. It cannot fight against a warrior people like the Ironborn who are all warriors and savages.

The Vale didn't have to go out and fight the Ironborn. That was Claude's point earlier; they didn't have to fight thanks to their location and their defences. They were able to decide when they'd go out and fight, and when they did, they usually won. Look at their participation in the wars of Westeros, and they're usually on the winning side.
