Asha Greyjoy and Alysane Mormont

Recommended Posts

What are your thoughts on the relation/bond that has been formed between Asha Greyjoy and Alysane Mormont, the second daughter of Maege Mormont and current lady of Bear Island in her mother's absence, during Asha's captivity under Stannis in A Dance With Dragons ?

How important do you think that this relation will be in The Winds Of Winter and for the rest of the story in general ?

Could you see the two becoming close enough to become friends ? What future interactions and moments could you see between the She-Kraken and the She-Bear ?

What character development could ensue for Asha as a result of her relation with Alysane and vice-versa ?

Alysane isn't friends with Asha. She made that quite clear when she pointed out how much the Ironborn have terrorised Bear Island over the years.

Asha might learn some lessons from that lecture, though. She's been growing more and more disillusioned with the Old Way since we first met her. Hopefully she becomes the sort of leader that her grandfather was.

As Floki pointed out, Alyssanne isn't inclined to be a friend of any ironborn. But their conversation does suggest that they might become friends in time. They have some things in common. They're both warrior women, born and raised on islands under somewhat rough conditons, pressed by circumstances into taking on missions usually reserved for men; and they're the only women in an army of men.

A lot depends on where the story goes from here. It's possible that Euron's attempt to restore the Old Way will result in a massive defeat; and we've seen hints that Asha, or more likely Theon, may end up on the Seastone Chair. This could Usher in renunciation of the Old Way, and a period of peaceful coexistence between the ironborn and the rest of Westeros. If that happens, these two ladies could end up as allies as well as friends, perhaps fighting together in the final battle against the Others.

Im more curious about Alysane and Tormund. She has his crooked teeth smile and the legend of him sleeping with a bear. With Mance Rayder coming south at least to Winterfell to see Robert allegedly.

There seems to be a wildling conspiracy a foot, but Im not sure what. Unless its just a right of passage to come south and steal a daughter of a noble lord as Bael did.

Which often reinforces my idea that Mance is who kidnapped Lyanna, not Rhaegar. That was just a Lannister lie to pit the Kingdom against the Targaryens. Along with Aerys using wildfire im starting to suspect is a lie put forth by the Lannisters, Pycell, and Yandel.

Yah maybe not a friendship but more of an alliance further down the road.  They are both strong women with a great deal of love for their lands.  I would expect they will both be rulers in some capacity in their respective places--perhaps commanding forces in the battles and wars yet to be seen.  I could see one or the other protecting or sheltering the other because she sees the human being beyond the history.  I wouldn't cross either one of them.  Likewise I would be glad to have either of them in my corner.

Asha was already planning on making peace with the North before Euron became king. That was why she brought the Glovers with her to Harlaw (and in a twist of fate, Galbart is now bros with Wex). Assuming her and Theon are able to retake the Seastone Chair, she’ll all but certainly start trying to bind the two kingdoms together.

Get ready to meet your new she-bear wife, nuncle Rodrik!

Euron isn't attempting to restore the Old Way at all, he may be crazy but he's not stupid unlike Balon and he has made it clear many times that he has nothing but disdain for the Ironborn's traditions and beliefs and what he offered to the Ironborn was something totally new while still appealing to the Ironborn's dellusions of grandeur.

But to come back to the topic I too don't see Asha and Alysane as friends yet, but they could become thus in function of Asha's character development in the North with her possibly becoming a bit of a northerner herself in terms of values, like Theon (which was ironically oneof the reasons why Theon was disdained and abused so much upon his return and why Balon largely favored her over him), and if she really fights to change the Ironborn and mend things with the North.

Alysane is currently slated to accompany Jeyne Poole to Castle Black.  Jeyne is likely to head to Braavos with Massey and the banker.  Alysane may well accompany her there.  The Mormonts are, after all, a prominent vassal of the Starks.  If she does go to Braavos, her story is more likely to intersect with Arya's.

In any case,  Asha is likely the new face of the Ironborn.  Trade and exploration offer a better future than raiding and kidnapping.  Their adherence to the old ways has helped keep them poor.  Asha is their best hope to change that.

Ironically, Asha mentioned at one point that she used to do trading herself down in the Reach, back when Robert was king.

Nothing beyond confirmation of the harm caused by the Ironborn's culture to Bear Island.  It is my opinion that the future of the Ironborn is in Asha's hands.  She will have to fight her Uncle Euron and kill him before she can take control of the Iron Isles and its people.
