What seems dire is the fact that he is helpless and at the hands of people who want him dead.

Though the giant is there, and Jon always treated him well, so Wun Wun will deal with Jon's attackers. Furthermore Jon wasn't alone when he walked out of the room where he made that announcement. So his escorts are also there, not far from where Jon was attacked. It just that in the commotion, when Jon charged by himself to stop what was happening prior he got attacked, his escorts were left behind, just a few steps behind Jon. So I think that by the time when Jon fell, those guys run towards him. So between the giant and Jon's guards, and the wildlings that came outside with Jon, his attackers lost the opportunity to kill him. They will be stopped before they will manage to do anything more.

Sure, but ... GRRM intends the situation to look dire.

But Jon decided to take Mel's warning seriously, then spent 2+ hours secretly plotting what to do about it, with Tormund and who knows who else.  If Jon has somehow managed to survive, I think the answer probably lies in those missing hours.

Evil in his heart is a curious statement.  I read rage and urgency, but not evil.   Anyone can be blinded when presented with a threat to all they know presents itself for complete annihilation.   Much as Jon is berated for choosing to rally defense for Winterfell, the threat was real and coming for all of them at Castle Black.   Both homes, families and lives in real danger.   For his public declaration he is stabbed by men he considered brothers.  Shock certainly played largely in this.  But evil?

I'm not bashing you, Brother, nor saying you are even wrong.  Just genuinely curious about this evil you see.

"Stick em with the pointy end" is a subconscious message to Arya to avenge him.  I guess it never occurred to Jon that it was he who was committing the crime and not Bowen Marsh.

Thank you.    I understand now.
