UK Politics: Testing, testing, one two free

The government lost fourteen votes in rapid succession in the House of Lords last night. Not sure if that's a record.

The Lords tore out all the post-bill horseshit Patel had added to try to effectively make protesting illegal in the UK, which means the bill reverted to the original version which went through the Commons. Which means in order to force that stuff through, they'd have to pull the bill entirely and resubmit it again, which will take ages and probably would just get shot down again.

Johnson says that nobody told him the huge garden party in the back of his house was against the rules. It's not like you'd expect the Prime Minister to actually understand the rules he's just forced the rest of the country to abide by. How can you expect him to know that a bunch of people standing around socialising and drinking might be against the rules!?

Cummings has announced that he did in fact tell him it was against the rules. Though Cummings has a fucking cheek

Absolute state of this cunt. You'd think anyone else would be doing whatever it took to salvage the last vestiges of dignity from this situation. This? This is just embarrassing. Embarrassing for Johnson, his party, but most of all, the cretins who voted for these fucking clowns with this guy at the helm. Lol at every single one of them.

I watched that earlier on, she absolutely fucking nailed him.

I almost felt sorry for him because of how utterly out of his depth he was.

Cummings says he would 'swear on oath' that he told Johnson it was against the rules and Johnson 'categorically' denies it.

They're both very emphatic, aren't they? Almost as if they understand that they don't have unblemished reputations for honesty.

I like the bit where he says he is waiting for Sue Gray's report to see whether he has mislead Parliament, clearly not something he could be expected to work out for himself.

If this is the quality of the people governing us, we might as well pack up and turn out the fucking lights.

To be fair I guess it is theoretically possible to have negotiated a Brexit deal where the UK continues to have a voice in the EU and MEPs. It would probably look a lot like remaining, but there might be a couple of differences, like returning to a blue passport, having crowns on pint glasses, and separate, inferior trade deals with 3rd countries.

Also, it might pay to check the market price for ostrich anus before using its worth as an insult. They might be quite expensive as I imagine they are fairly hard to come by.

That's about as likely as discovering the secret Yeti holiday retreat in Antarctica. European parliament is the representation of the citizens of the EU. And as we've learnt Brexit means Brexit. I suspect even our resident Brexiteer would be able to grasp the simple logic of: No EU membership, no MEPs. That Dorries fails to comprehend that basic concept is bizarre. In fairness she was presumabl acting dumb for the domestic audience, from there you can draw conclusions about what she thinks of the intelligence of her voters.

It's not Eurovision, it's the parliament of the European Union. It's not even theoretical possible.

You maybe think of Cameron's "attempts" to negotiate even more special boons from UKs then partners in the EU from the time leading to Brexit. I also believe you know that nothing stopped them from having blue crowns on their passports. Probably no trade deals though, even though I believe what they had with China was going into that direction.

No, that's the system working as intended and as originally designed. Voters in Bury South did not vote for the Conservative Party, at least in theory: they voted for Christian Wakeford to be their MP. And he still is.

To have an automatic by-election when an MP changes parties would give political parties a significance in the system that they've actually never held.

I'm sorry, but every single word you wrote, barring the first sentence, is rubbish. Maybe if this was still 1857, you'd have a point. But I have never voted for 'the candidate'. I vote for the party, same as everyone else I know. I love my MP, but if Bambos defected, he'd be dead to me.
