Very disappointed to see a lot of people I admire hand-waving the Jimmy Carr joke.

For instance:

No. He most definitely is not a decent person. Quite apart from the fact that he has made a career, and a shit load of money, of out of punching down on all kinds of minority groups with his 'jokes', he is a disgusting, tax evading wanker. And I really, really hope he gets what's coming.

ETA:

Here is the 'joke'.

"No one ever wants to talk about the thousands of Gypsies killed by the Nazis, because no one wants to talk about the positives."

Not very funny, is it?

Would Coren-Mitchell be defending him if he'd substituted the word 'gypsies' with any of the other groups targeted by Hitler's holocaust? Can you imagine the noise if Carr had made that joke about Jews? Rachel Riley's head would literally have exploded.

This is not okay.

What do comedians say about bad jokes? "The only bad joke is one that isn't funny." But that surely depends on the audience. I would like to qualify that truism by suggesting they tell the joke to an audience full of the people they are joking about and see how it lands, before bringing it out in the general public (or at least play the scene out in your own mind). A joke taking a shot at Jews will get a big laugh from an audience of Nazis and white supremacists, it might get a bit of a different reaction from a room full of Jews. By who's senses of humour should you judge the wisdom of said joke?

What are you saying? You're okay with jokes like that? When the UK government is launching legislative attacks on their way of life?

I'm saying that I'm OK with ethnic jokes that the vast majority of said ethnicity would find funny. However I would also guess that most of the time a person not of that ethnicity who tells such jokes would not get much of a laugh from people of that ethnicity. At comedian school I would make every student watch Contrapoints' 'The Darkness' and have them deeply contemplate the objects of their jokes.

Irish people, typically don't care for Irish jokes told by non-Irish people.

I think maybe the only jokes I can think of that are largely appreciated by both sides are Aus / NZ jokes.

Starmer bundled into police car after being mobbed by a group shouting about Jimmy Saville and calling him a traitor.

Apparently they had brought a noose and some were saying things like, "you deserve to be hung".

Johnson's got a lot to answer for.

That is definitely nazi/USA YAY territory.  This is very bad, as of course you know already.  Waiting now for the guy who showed up out of nowhere in the Canadian thread where he's never been before, to laugh in the faces of homeless people in Ottawa having the bread pulled out of their mouths by these types in Ottawa.to show up laughing some more.

Global movement, yes it is.

And someone should be sent back to school to learn proper grammar.

What happened?

Keir Starmer got swarmed on the street by a bunch of angry, gammony thugs. A lot of them were shouting things about Jimmy Savile, calling him a traitor and god knows what else.

He had to be scooped up by the police and taken to a place of safety.

Even after this, Johnson is refusing to withdraw his comments, instead offering a mealy-mouthed condemnation through his latest mouthpiece.

To be fair to Johnson, even though this will all be painted as incitement because of his stupid Saville comments, that wasn't the reason they were there and it wasn't why they were protesting Starmer.

They were the same stupid Anti Lockdown fools protesting.. who knows what they are protesting these days as there is no lockdown, and unlike other countries we don't have a vaccine mandate.

This will all be used as another stick to beat Johnson with however, another push to get him out the door.

Oh come on!

What do anti-lockdown protests have to do with Jimmy Saville?  And what do they even have to do with Keir Starmer?  No point heckling him about them - he's not (unfortunately) in charge!  Their protest quickly turned into a dangerous mob - they were looking for trouble.

Chris Bryant seems to be speaking for Labour on this - and he is speaking very well.  Johnson knew damn well what he was doing by dropping this scandalous slur.  He was advised against it, and he did it anyway.  It was premeditated and deliberate.  And he knew where the lie originated, so he knew what kind of people he would be winding up.  We have all seen what these people are capable of.

Furthermore, Johnson could diffuse this situation very very easily.  And yet, he has deliberately double downed.  It's a lie, a slur, a right wing conspiracy - and our Prime Minister is using his position to endorse and spread it.

This is all on him.

Nothing really, except I guess they all fit into the same conspiracy laden lunatic groups that believe all this stuff. But the point is they were there to heckle Starmer for his support on Lockdowns.

In which case why Keir Starmer? Especially as I note that they accused him of being part of the "deep state". Why not someone actually in the government that  actually decided on the lockdowns?

And why mention Jimmy Saville?  That has nothing to do with lockdowns!  And why mob him so badly that the police had to escort him to safety?

Johnson gave them the ammunition and wound them up.

Because

1. They are nuts
2. It is just another dig at Starmer, people are emotional and are hurling insults around
3. It gets more publicity for a protest that is largely ignored by the media
4. They are nuts.

So you are following Johnson's line that it is complete co-incidence that it happened to be Starmer, that it happened now, and that some of the demonstrators were shouting that he was a paedophile protector and shouting Saville's name. (Hopefully you are not going along with them in lying about what Johnson actually said though.) And you are following this line despite even some Tories saying that it is nonsense,

We will have to disagree then. But I see this as an interesting bellwether - if you are prepared to defend Johnson over this, then his tactic may have worked well enough that he may now last a little longer, to the further detriment of our democracy..
