Pebble thats Stubby
Ok so he could ignore the sanction as PM but the sanction still technically happens so I think it should still trigger the recall petition? although this does create a constitutional nightmare. And he really should be removed by his MPs before this.
A wilding
Very delayed reply, sorry. My understanding (though I may be wrong) is that ministers do not fall under the jurisdiction of the standards commissioner, but instead a separate "ministers interests advisor". The previous ministers interests advisor produced a report in 2020 saying Patel was guilty of bullying, but Johnson unprecedentedly ignored this report and did not sack her. The advisor promptly resigned, and Johnson replaced him with a tame one who could be relied on not to find anyone guilty of anything (this advisor went though some serious contortions last year not to have to censure Johnson over the redecoration of his flat). In any case Johnson has now established the precedent that he can ignore reports from this advisor if he wants.

Werthead
This is like Truss walking straight into the Russian geography fail yesterday (which itself had echoes of Johnson's Burma-Kipling fuck-up, even down to the British ambassador frantically trying to get them to shut the fuck up). maarsen
I just saw that Andy settled his lawsuit. No details yet but I wonder if there is a new princess named Virginia as part of the settlement.

mormont
Quote Prince Andrew, the statement added, had "never intended to malign Ms Giuffre's character". He (or his lawyers, with his assent) publicly called her a greedy liar. Quote He also commended the "bravery of Ms Giuffre and other survivors in standing up for themselves and others". Yeah, standing up to you, you weasel.
The Anti-Targ
If one sees greed and lying as commendable qualities then one is not maligning the character by describing a person as such?
mormont
Just a reminder that this is being portrayed as (and is) a crushing defeat for Andrew. But what that means is, that having effectively caved over allegations of sexual assault, he will now: - let his mother pay off the victim from her massive personal fortune, - not have to publicly admit his crime, - spend the rest of his life living a luxurious retirement in a lodge on one of his mother's estates, with domestic staff taking care of his every need, never having to worry about money or earning a living or doing anything he doesn't feel like doing. The only thing he's really lost is the ego boost of playing at patron to a few charities and getting invites to fancy dinners.

mormont
What it boils down to is yet further proof that in this country, there's a certain level of privilege where even when you lose, you win. And the Royal family are exemplars of that.
john
I feel like it’s right some of the settlement should come from public money, the British people should shoulder a little of the responsibility for the obnoxious result of this absurd institution we’ve been celebrating for hundreds of years after it became absurd. A Horse Named Stranger
If only Fergie had been black, then Andrew wouldn't be a British concern today. Would be a very cynical take on him. So I'll leave it somebody else to say that.
