What would have been the best plan for the Wildlings to cross the Wall and come south ?

Recommended Posts

What do you think should have been Mance Rayder's plan to allow his people to bypass or cross the Wall and arrive in the Gift and North to find new lands while taking the least risks and casualties possible from the Night's Watch and the North's response ?

Which alternative plans would at least have been better and more pragmatic than his plans during ACOK and ASOS ?

Well the best way to get across would be to ensure that whoever the lord Commander of the Wall is when you're crossing is sympathetic to your cause.

Maybe his best course of action would be to abduct a member of the Night's Watch who may have some big backers at the Wall and have him live and travel with the free folk a while and absorb their point of view for a bit.  They're all abstinent at the wall so getting him laid would certainly help. Love would be really helpful. Once he's hooked, send him back to his people, let yur friends on the Wall do their work and BOOM you've got a sympathetic LC at the Wall who will usher you through.

Of course Mance would need a friend or two to pull this off.

Sure they could have had 100000 people scale the wall and just settle in the Gift where and how they pleased, but they would be invaders and someone in Winterfell wouldn't sleep until they'd been rounded up and wiped out.

They didn't even have that 100.000, they have 30-40.000, it comes from the best source possible, Jon who's been given military training his entire life and had spend time in that host.

"What if we refuse the offer?" Jon had no doubt that they would. The Old Bear might at least have listened, though he would have balked at the notion of letting thirty or forty thousand wildlings loose on the Seven Kingdoms. But Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt would dismiss the notion out of hand.

They only had a chance at scaling because the Watch had dwindled  to fewer than a thousand men with three hundred leagues to cover.

Right. Same difference though.

If say they attempted this during LC Hoare’s time they would’ve had even less of a chance. Even against 10.000 men you may scale the walls unnoticed with a small group like Jon’s raiding party but Mance’s host would be discovered.

Anyway, what they need is indeed someone sympathetic to their cause but it’s not a LC, but a Stark. Remember Stannis wanted to have the wildlings cross, Jon agreed but also mentions even if he disagreed, he doesn’t have the manpower to oppose Stannis.

The lords of the north will not let them plant themselves on their side of the wall.  Any plans which would avoid the need to kneel and pay taxes mean the removal of the ruling lords from power.
