Football: Deadline Day

Inter were good. They were pretty unlucky to end up losing by two goals.

That's probably the best Van Dijk has played since coming back from his injury and Konate looked really good alongside him too. Not the best game from Elliott unfortunately but he's only just back from injury I suppose. Firmino was no worse than anyone else at the start of the second half, scored the key goal and played pretty well from then on.

ETA: Bayern got it back to 1-1 but that's far better than most people expected Salzburg to do I think. Bayern shipped four goals at the weekend too so maybe they aren't quite the force this year we were expecting.

Even after his goal, Firmino continued to give the ball away. Him giving the ball away constantly was one of the reasons Inter were able to keep the pressure on us for so long.

Elliott is still mostly potential at this point, and typically doesn't play all that well, so not a great surprise. He's only a kid, and there are lots of positives to his game, but a lot of our fans have gone way overboard with him.

VVD and Konate both had great games, and I thought Diaz looked really good again too.

Inzaghi plays better brand of football than Conte. Our board brought him because he plays same formation as him; but he's working with what he has and doesn't complain to the press constantly, and earns 3 times the less himself. It was a more pragmatic choice than some visionary signing from their point of view. They were otherwise going to hire Allegri (who prefers very negative football) a year before when Conte was threatening to leave us (publicly).

Shame that Inzaghi lacks depth to work with, if only he was the one having Hakimi and Lukaku to use some speed upfront. The only upgrade we have is Calhanoglu instead of Eriksen, Hakan did more for us in few months than Eriksen in a year and a half.

Hell, if we were the ones to overspend on Tammy Abraham instead of Roma, we'd be much more clinical upfront. Abraham does great in our league for a freaking Roma side that spends far less time in opposition's half than we do.

Klopp changed the game with his subs and there was little Inzaghi could do there.

Good to see Keita and Hendo redeem themselves a bit tonight.  We had better control when they came on, even with Fabinho departing.  Plus Diaz looked sharp and our CBs were very good.  Mane, Salah and Trent aren’t at top fitness at the moment.

Inter worked very hard to give us a tough game but it was going to be tough for them to sustain that for the whole match.
