Tyrion Lannister: Good or Bad, or Something in Between?

Tyrion is “the villain”, according to the author, albeit his favourite character.  I view him as Martin’s version of Richard III.

He is engaging at times, not without empathy or insight, but objectively speaking, an awful human being.  He has no qualms about bringing fire and sword to the smallfolk of the Vale, to punish Lysa Arryn, nor about serving a murderous regime at the highest level.  His attitudes towards women are primitive in the extreme.

Tyrion. Messed up with kind impulses, survival villain mode, mixed character with a terrible reputation, and could go fire and blood. He is probably not big on slaving at the moment. Yes , he could be very bad and with a dragon, too. He is a lot of fun to read because he is witty, clever, cynical, emotional, and hot blooded.

I'd say in between. He definitely had his dark aspects, and part of what makes him a compelling character is the reader can identify with why he ended up this way. He also has compassion and even a general desire to be decent in a savage time.

As things are going by book 5 he's sliding more towards evil though. Maybe he'll have an intervention that lets him get his life back on track. Or maybe he'll keep taking his daily doses of screwitol and continue his decent into darkness and despair.

He's probably a split personality (hinted by that dream of two heads). It's hard to pin down the split through - humane and not-humane? fire-and-blood and not? irrc he contradicts himself once or twice: advises Jon to embrace his identity and not be mocked on it - but himself is very touchy and resentful about being a dwarf in Westerosi society.

To be fair, it's a lot easier for many people to give advice than take it for themselves.

I hate him and he's a disgusting human being. Tywin should've thrown him into the sea and spared his family a world of pain

of course the heads of  himself, Jamie and Cersei could discuss this together from the atop the pikes they'd be skewered on after the Blackwater had Tyrion not been there to stop Stannis. Maybe not discuss so much as just get pecked by crows...

Tyrion is dark. He set Aegon on a self destructive path.

he was more of a good guy in book one but he is getting darker each book. I'd like to mention that his train of thoughts as he was manipulating Aegon was interesting, considering he had not yet decided what his own agenda is (he hadn't even if he wants to live yet!)  and was merely playing with him: " There, that’s made him good and angry "
