He is engaging at times, not without empathy or insight, but objectively speaking, an awful human being. He has no qualms about bringing fire and sword to the smallfolk of the Vale, to punish Lysa Arryn, nor about serving a murderous regime at the highest level. He's good to people when it suits him and if he doesn't need to be good to someone, usually he behaves very very bad. And he has gotten worse and worse as the books have progressed. He is probably not big on slaving at the moment. Yes , he could be very bad and with a dragon, too. He is a lot of fun to read because he is witty, clever, cynical, emotional, and hot blooded. He definitely had his dark aspects, and part of what makes him a compelling character is the reader can identify with why he ended up this way. He also has compassion and even a general desire to be decent in a savage time. As things are going by book 5 he's sliding more towards evil though. Maybe he'll have an intervention that lets him get his life back on track. Or maybe he'll keep taking his daily doses of screwitol and continue his decent into darkness and despair. It's hard to pin down the split through - humane and not-humane? fire-and-blood and not? irrc he contradicts himself once or twice: advises Jon to embrace his identity and not be mocked on it - but himself is very touchy and resentful about being a dwarf in Westerosi society.
