Marvelous Kids of Westeros

we've all had our own share of fun and/or frustration about how unrealistically young the characters are. but even with Westerosi standards , there are some astonishing children with great achievements.

for example:

Barristan "the Bold" Selmy : won his first tourney at the age of 10 as a mystery knight

Aemond "one-eyed" Targaryen: tamed and rode the oldest living dragon , Vhagar, at the age of 10

Lucerys Velaryon : confronted and blinded his uncle at the age of 5

Rhaenyra Targaryen : became a dragon rider at the age of 7.

Brandon Stark : ruled Winterfell ,too wisely for his age, at the of 8 and let's face it : will probably save 7 kingdoms at the age of 10-11?!

who else?

The best of them all.  Daenerys.  Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, she hatched her three dragons at the age of fourteen.  She liberated 8,000 slave soldiers.

Sweetrobin Arryn, who makes bad people fly at age 6. (ROFL)

Arya Stark, who's currently training with the Faceless Men at...what? 10?

Tommen Baratheon, a sweet boy who became king at age 8.

Myrcella Baratheon, who survived an assassination attempt at age 9.

I agree that Barristan winning a tourney at 10 seems very hard to believe. But I have no issue with all the rest that you mention:

Many children start to ride horses at seven. Riding dragons doesn't need to be harder. In fact, it may even be assumed to be easier given that dragons have been shown to have some kind of supernatural connection to their riders.

Lucerys Velaryon : confronted and blinded his uncle at the age of 5 .

His uncle was only ten, and it was a three against one fight. Aemond was unarmed, and Luce took his eye out when he unexpectedly produced a hidden dagger while Aemond was focused on beating Jace.

Brandon never ruled Winterfel. Rodrik Cassel and maester Luwin did.

There's a tendency to assume that young children are less capable than they really are. Our own real world is full of ruling kings and elite athletes in their early teens.

Aegon III certainly seems to act like George Martin’s perception of a moody teenager.

Aegon III seems to have crippling PTSD that led to severe, life-long depression. "Moody teenager" wasn't what George was going for.

Luke is actually still four when that happens. The event takes place at Laenor's funeral which must happened rather early in 120 AC since Rhaenyra only got pregnant after that and gave birth to Aegon III at the end of the year.

Jacaerys was born late in 114 AC, so Luke cannot have been born in early or middle 115 AC, since a pregnancy lasts for about nine months.

That's all simple math and it very much sucks that we have to imagine boys of that age in a fight involving dangerous weapons. That's just silly.

Barristan did not win a tournament at 10.  He entered as a mystery knight and was defeated by Duncan, Prince of Dragonflies (ASOS, Jaime VIII).  Still pretty impressive.

Arya survived several weeks on the streets of Kings Landing at 9.  A precarious existence, but she made it.

Missandei knows multiple languages and is a useful assistant, interpreter, scribe and advisor to Daenerys at 10.

Willow Heddle standing up to Rorge and the Brave Companions armed with only a crossbow at 10.  Come to think on it, she was in charge of the whole operation at the Inn at the Crossroads.

Podrick Payne successfully shadowing Brienne across much of the Crownlands, all by himself at 12.

Jamie Lannister was knighted at 16 after cutting an outlaw's head off.  Jon Snow was only 15 or 16 when he was elected LC of the NW.  Sansa was betrothed to the future King of Westeros at age 12.  Tyrion was married and divorced by gang rape at 13 years of age.  Rickon is orphaned and homeless by age 4.  I can't go into what Sam endured at the place he came from, but so many of these kids have survived some horrendous things.  Look at The Hound.  Gads.

You forgot to mention poor Jeyne Poole, subject to more horrors than I care to think about at age 13.  Amazingly, she's still standing and likely to stay that way.

And I fear for Beth Cassel, age 10/11, last seen headed for the Dreadfort under Ramsay's tender, loving care.

Gads.  Thanks for the reminders...
