U.S. Politics: Contempt and the Courts

Such a common thing These Days, I guess this could have been predicted.  (BTW  $tarbux is determined to block the union efforts ongoing in many of their locations, particularly here in NYC.)

Amazon seeks to overturn union win, says vote was tainted

Amazon is seeking to overturn the historic union victory at one of its New York City warehouses, arguing in a legal filing Friday that union organizers and the National Labor Relations Board acted in a way that tainted the results. It now wants to redo the election.

The e-commerce giant listed 25 objections in the filing obtained by The Associated Press, accusing organizers with the nascent Amazon Labor Union of intimidating workers to vote for the union, a claim an attorney representing the group has called “patently absurd.” ....

The success of these non-professional YOUNG union organizers on Staten Island and their methods -- all legal, such as helping with childcare and transportation for the voting employees -- also keeping out the OLD professionals who don't actually deal with the workers, but only with the capital/owner/management, and who also tried to sabotage the SI amazon union efforts  --brought to mind the successes of some of our local YOUNG politicians whom we label evidently for want of anything better, 'progressive', such as AOC, and one of my own district's council members, Christopher Marte.  He's the only politician from my district with whom I have had personal interaction, due to his own efforts, and this interaction has been ongoing ever since he began his political life.  Others only send mass mailings, and do it only when there's an election in the offing.

Here's the latest of what Chris has done -- just yesterday. He’s so smart.  He, his young and elderly, and admit it, attractive workers were gathered by our local supermarket -- as happens frequently.  He'd achieved 10 million dollars for improvement to our district.  He presented a wish list of how it might be spent.  We got to pick three from the list.  What a smart way to stay in contact with the voters, show them what he’s done, and what may be done with what has been done.

My three picks were all ways to spend money in the local public schools, such as equipment for the science labs -- or even building one! -- investing in the school library, and hiring more teachers.  There were other choices that I also approve of, such as for our dreadfully neglected public spaces and so on.

Christopher Marte:   Battery Park City, Civic Center, Chinatown, Financial District, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, NoHo, SoHo, South Street Seaport, South Village, TriBeCa & Washington Square.

We need thousands more like him and AOC.

Sounds like Dee Snider's not gonna take it anymore.

One of my favorite categories of posts on Twitter is right wing people finding out that musicians they love don't share their politics.  There was some cop a few years ago losing his shit because his favorite song was Killing in the Name of but he'd never actually thought about the lyrics.

Conservatives love to appropriate progressive’s art or rhetoric.

because they’re own is often terrible.

If they’re unable to successfully appropriate art as being expressively aligned with their values they’ll do the cancel culture and cry “it’s too political” to shut it down.

You'd think a bunch of bands wearing makeup, presenting as androgynous, snorting cocaine, singing about evading the cops, etc., etc. might tip someone off that these aren't conservatives.

Well...'Country Music' is fairly popular among conservatives, and many of those songs feature getting drunk, cheating on spouses, and assorted illicit activities....

The problem is, your modern conservative likes to think he's a rebel. So he likes bands and songs that are about being a rebel.

Then one day, he has a rude collision with the fact that no, you're the establishment, buddy. And you always have been. These bands you like were rebelling against you. And that's never a pretty moment.

Elon Musk, free-speech absolutist, may be Trump’s Twitter ticket:

Quote

But another poll makes Musk’s latest move even more intriguing as it may involve a former president. The Tesla CEO asked this question: “Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” More than 70 percent of the 2 million of his followers who voted said “no.”

“The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully,” Musk added in words that anticipated his purchasing of a stake in Twitter just days later.

Seems like an obvious inference but didn't think about it when the news broke.

In other Trumpy news, he's endorsed Dr. Oz in the Pennsylvania Senate race.  Somewhat surprising for two reasons.  One, Oz's chief rival, David McCormick, has a lot of Trumpist ties.  Two, McCormick is slightly leading in most polls, and more importantly there are still a massive amount of undecideds (for the primary).  Another risky endorsement for Trump just as he's hedging on his endorsement of David Perdue in the Georgia governor's race against Brian Kemp.  Kemp has stabilized his lead and may not even require a runoff to defeat Perdue.

The Chicks come to mind.

I mean, they murder Earl in that song.

Yesterday was the anniversary of Grant accepting Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

The consequences of this event ripple up through time, as we see here, in this Lincoln Journal Star article from 1920:

"Jazz Is Blamed For Lack Of Farm Labor: Tempting Offers By Farmers Receive Very Little Response"

Because, as we know bhob, without abolition, there would have been no jazz and easy jobs in Chicago to lure men away from the simple, financially rewarding lives of 24/7 agricultural labor, and life for us all would be as it should be.

My favorite phrase in this piece, the ones that provoke unrestrained laughter, are "tempting offers by farmers."

https://pessimistsarchive.org/list/jazz/clippings/1920/sc-488

FWIW: The BBC, newly established in 1922, that in these first years was purely improvisation and experimentation as was Jazz itself in many ways, was prohibited from having jazz among all the varieties of music its stations in its localities provided. Though, of course, since the calvinist Reith (from Glasgow and a Presbyterian minister's son) couldn't keep his eyes on all the regional station from Wales to England to Scotland) sometimes this prohibition was ignored, indeed.  It was was the Jazz Age after all!

This is so sick and cruel.  Texas is dead to me.

It turns out it was hospital staff that turned the woman in to the cops.  Anyway, then, how do They know it was a self-induced abortion?  Not a miscarriage?

Interesting, wonder if the hospital was a Catholic one or run by another religion.  If the woman was a patient there, wouldn't this be a violation of her HIPPA rights?  Not that it matters as apparently, punishment of women is what really matters.

"After pursuing an indictment, Starr County DA drops murder charge over self-induced abortion"

https://abc13.com/texas-news-lizelle-herrera-murder-charges-dropped-self-induced-abortion/11734455/

Because you frakin' Texas ignorant lawyer, self-induced abortion is NOT a crime in Texas.  Who knew?  Not the DA. Spit.

She can sue the DA and the hospital both, and who knows who else -- if she could possibly handle the bs, and doubtless death threats and everything else.  OTOH, They will probably harrass, abuse nd threaten to kill her anyway.

From other stories released now we learn that probably the woman arrested had a miscarriage not even a self-induced abortion.  But there IS NO WAY TO KNOW whether that's the case or not.  Of course either one shouldn't mean she should be arrested for murder, held for over 5 days in prison on $500,000 bail (raised by a group trying to help women in Texas with their reproductive medical issues), while being harrassed and investigated since JANUARY.

Texas you need to be hit by the Hurricane of Hurricanes and washed into the Gulf.

This is the shyte historically that women put up with from men who know nothing at all about women, reproduction, labor, childbirth, raising children but who are determined to decide.

O so clever.  Any woman who really needs an abortion in Texas needs to leave the state or try something or other, and then go the hospital or a doctor or somebody for care, and those people get arrested -- but nobody knows whether it is a miscarriage or not.  But we can tie up the entire legal system with prosecutions against thousands and thousands and thousand of people -- and get loads of moola too, via the ridiculous bail shyte system.

Not to mention neighbors, your own children, fellow employees, anybody, spying on you and your body and actions -- for REWARD -- on all women.  This is even more inclusive for spying and reasons for spying than the Stassi in East Germany back in the day.

HIPPA doesn't applies when a law is broken.  I'm sure Texas anti-abortion law has a stipulation that not reporting is subjective to a fine.
