U.S. Politics: Contempt and the Courts

Hey Americans, shouldn’t it be common sense that election day should be on a non-work day for the sake of democracy? (Saturday or Sunday)

Hey Americans, shouldn’t it be common sense that any law that is passed that stops tens of thousands of legitimate votes from being counted, in order to a prevent a few hundred possible fraudulent votes from being counted, is non-democratic?

And that any political party that supports such laws is authoritarian in nature?

Edit: Comma’s were in the wrong place.

There are lots of people who have to work on Saturday or Sunday, and I would guess more of those are lower income people than people who work Monday through Friday. So I would prefer there to be safeguards put into place that would require employers to give workers time off on election day with no repercussions, no matter what day of the week it is.

Yeah making election day a national holiday was in the voting rights bill - even Manchin was all for it.  It'd be interesting to see how many GOP Senate votes a standalone bill would get, if any.

We're learning more about that Texas arrest for murder due to induction/miscarriage -- while learning nothing at all.

Long rundown about it in the WaPo, with many more details, but it still makes no sense.  Everyone still running about with hands in air, "O a mistake, how could this have happened, didn't mean, this was wrong, don't understand."

Perhaps, very subtly, the piece suggests the real culprit is the woman's husband, with whom she had two boys, upon whom she served divorce papers shortly before she was reported by somebody -- who? -- as inducing an abortion?

Alas, under subscription paywall:

A call, a text, an apology: How an abortion arrest shook up a Texas town
The arrest and since-dropped murder charge against a 26-year-old woman stoked widespread outrage and confusion.

Whatevers.  It changes not at all that these people, whoever they may be, made this woman's life hell for months, for a crime that doesn't exist even in TX.

How nice these individuals choose not to prosecute, despite their state's laws.  Other individuals are always at liberty to prosecute when they so choose.

The woman of course, has no right to choose for herself. SPIT.

Now, if these individuals would have said something about this law being unlawful and it must be removed, I'd feel a whole lot better.

Yes.  If we are going to limit the franchise to in person ballots we should absolutely get the day off to vote.  But Republicans would prefer to make voting difficult.

I fucking warned people that women suffering miscarriages would be targeted.

So did we all.  Even more to the point such laws targeting anybody for criminal action around abortion are unlawful -- other than someone attempting to FORCE her to abort, by kicking or other means.

Statement from 5 DA's in Texas condemning the murder charge.  They note that they are elected officials, I wouldn't be surprised to see recalls on them in   3...2...1

Hm..interesting that the DAs of Harris (Houston) and Tarrant (Fort Worth) didn't sign it.  Looking it up and..yep, the Harris County DA, Kim Ogg, only won reelection by about 8 points in 2020.  (Couldn't quickly find any information on the Tarrant County DA elections.  ETA:  Just found it, and Tarrant County's DA - Sharen Wilson - had a similarly close election in 2018..and she's a Republican.)

That's significantly closer than the comfortable margins the signees won by in their last elections in Dallas, Bexar (San Antonio), and Travis (Austin).  The profile in courage would be signee Mark Gonzalez, the Nueces County (Corpus Christi) DA who only won in 2020 by 2.4%, or under three thousand votes.

To be clear, all the DAs in these cities are Democrats (except Wilson).

So was the DA where Herrera was arrested and charged.

Yep.  I was primarily interested in big cities, as they're gonna tend to skew Democrat anywhere in the country, even Texas.  The counties of Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin all have populations over a million, whereas Starr County has a population of about 66 thousand.  Although unsurprising given its location, also interesting that Starr County is the most Hispanic county in the US - 97.7%.

It should be a fairy easy issue for unions to negotiate with….oh, right.

HA!

Mark Meadows removed from North Carolina voter rolls amid state investigation into voter fraud allegations:

Quote

Mark Meadows was removed from the North Carolina voter rolls this week, as the state investigation into allegations that the former Trump chief of staff committed voter fraud continues.

The Macon County Board of Elections director, Melanie Thibault, confirmed that she removed Meadows’ registration from the county’s voter roll on Monday.

Thibault told CNN that “Macon County administratively removed the voter registration of Mark Meadows,” as “he lived in Virginia and last voted in the 2021 election there.”

Looks like Governor Abbot's border policy is about to blow up in his face. Looking at a *lot* of ticked off shoppers:

'It's getting worse,' frustration rising over truck backlogs at Texas-Mexico border (msn.com)

The delays are all due to additional safety inspections mandated by Governor Greg Abbott of trucks bringing products into the United States.

Normally it would take trucks 30 to 40 minutes to cross the border. But it is taking some closer to 12 hours. The chokepoint in international commerce is causing a lot of concern for an already broken supply chain in the country.

One trucking and logistics company told CBS 11 about the damage the situation is causing their business.

"Today we had one shipment, it got there at 5:30 in the morning. It's 7:15 and still hasn't gotten here," said the owner of Richer Logistics Services, Ermilo Richer.
