The emphasized is interesting. What's your reasoning, Ty?

Twitter on the whole isn't good for society. Like at all. I cheer for the day when it goes away, but then again it will probably be replaced by something even dumber than Tiktok.

Just admitted, in secret you are quite eagerly awaiting for the first Trump speech with a cat filter.

In a very generalized sense I suppose I see what you're saying. Engagement on Twitter however, is next to nothing compared to Facebook and Youtube for instance. Stricter regulation is required across all social media, imo, but Twitter is amongst the least offensive on that front.

An easily manipulated subset of society, which social media compounds, is a tough nut to crack.

Sigh, that just means Teddy boy will copy him. But I guess I'd take it if in exchange I get to see what those two fucknuts get for targeted IG ads.

Interesting findings from a new AP-NORC poll on education:

Quote

When it comes to discussion of racism in the United States, 37% feel their public schools are focusing on it the right amount. Again, the rest of the public is split with 27% who feel their local schools are focusing on racism too much and 34% who feel there is not enough focus. [...]

The survey finds majorities of both Democrats and Republicans do not support policies that prohibit books about divisive topics or prevent teachers from teaching about sex and sexuality. Yet, there are sharp partisan divides when it comes to views on allowing transgender students to use bathrooms that match their preferred gender identity or renaming schools named after historical figures that supported slavery or segregation.

I think it's slightly better than FB for having a discussion about something, but still really poor as a medium as far as that goes.  What it does well is give people quick access to primary sources (and fake primary sources) of breaking events that we never had before.

Riffing on what @JGP said, I'm not a free speech absolutist by any means but I don't think that heavier regulation of social media is going to improve society at all.   Unless you have some independent mechanism doing the regulating it's just going to boost certain corporate priorities.  Maybe there's a way to do it well, I just think the only thing worse than what we have now would be giving these companies a other way to spin their own priorities as user protections

Didn't FB end up doubling down on boosting right-wing batshit stuff when they tried to moderate feeds?

I'm not limiting my complaints to just how social media impacts political discourse, it's fucking up kids in general, these companies are aware of it and they've been caught trying to hide or minimize it like it's a throwback to how tobacco companies behaved. I don't pretend to have a perfect solution to this, but inaction is not an option.

Same, I detest the prick.

In that event, I'm sure I'll also have to trot out my dramatically maniacal laugh as I subsequently watch the Twitter stock fall and some of his billions evaporate.

On a lighter, non important note, what do you think should happen to the U.S. flag if another state eventually gets admitted to the Union (Puerto Rico or D.C.)?

50 stars has been such a nice, pretty number of stars in the blue field for so long.

We should go ahead and make the official flag the 13 circle of stars one right now to prevent some weird future insane debate.

In order to get Joe Manchin on board, Hawaii will have to share its star with Puerto Rico.

Joe Manchin has an island friend.

Huh?  Yachts don't count as islands.  Unless you're saying Joe Manchin is an island.  Because a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries.

Yeah if twitter goes private to Big Musky I'm assuming I'll be banned immediately.

If Musk buys Twitter, I may actually start using my dormant account... to shit on Musk.

Just to see how far his idea of free speech goes, but then again I'm insignificant enough that I'd likely just be ignored. Eh, maybe a worthwhile experiment.
