Spockydog
The other day, I went for a pint with a mate. The pub we chose, The Spaniards Inn, is a good few miles away, but well worth the drive. Though, for a moment I feared we'd never get there. You see, he's a big boy, my mate. About six-foot-six, with a fifty-inch chest. How we laughed as he squeezed his giant frame into my little car. For a moment, it looked like we might have to get an uber, but in the end he managed to get in. On the way, we stopped for petrol. £9 a gallon. Certainly, at £9 a gallon, you got fucked…

Spockydog
I mean, I'm sure nobody is surprised, but... "The Times also reports that Boris Johnson is routinely late for meetings, with aides forced to cover for him while he takes naps."

Another way of framing this; Johnson knows he’d be only an impediment at meetings so he often gracefully moves over to allow his more skilled aids to handle things. Spockydog
I was going to ask who is falling for this shit, but as we know, there are plenty of useful idiots in this country, willing to lap up this nonsense.

The UK made news here because Boris decided to fight the evil metric system and push the pound, yard, once and so on again. Clearly a most pressing issue! Lady_Qohor
What are people's plans for the jubilee bank holiday weekend? I'm a bit quite annoyed as I feel like if I go out and have fun then I'm implicitly condoning an undemocratic system that I really don't support. As sad, as it is, I might just use the extra bank holidays for work stuff.

So long as you have meaningful work you can do of course. If you felt a greater affinity to some anniversary that is not a public holiday then could you take that day off and work on a public holiday that observes something you don't feel particularly connected with, like this Jubilee in your case? Legislatively, you're not forced to take any holiday, so long as you don't exceed the working time directive (though it's only a matter of time before that's repealed - I'm actually surprised it hasn't already). Practically though, there's not a huge amount of option for many people. If you office is closed today, they probably won't be opening up just so that you can be an awkward bugger. If you've got kids, they'll be home, so A] someone has to look after them, and B] there's a good chance you'll actually WANT to be home with them (people are supposed to LIKE their kids, yeah?). Personally, this weekend, I'll be playing D&D with my wife (introduced her during the May bank holiday - she likes overcomplicating things, and then telling me of for making them complicated), doing some gardening, and having a BBQ - might invite some friends around, depending on our moods and whether we feel like socialising or not. Honestly, I usually do, particularly now the kids have moved out and now that I can work from home. I can get a lot done on a bank holiday. I'll take a day off and hold a party the day they abolish the monarchy. Not celebrating the fact that they're still around.
