US Politics: Supreme Courting to insanity.

Recommended Posts

I was too I’ll to go, but my DH brought me video of the Gay Pride parade in our Canadian city. It was joyful. One year I attended and used my color wheel umbrella. ( couldn’t expose skin to sunlight) People wanted to know where I got it from. And it is a controversial large company. Oh well. This year lots of people had color wheels and flags with other flavors as well. Today I wore something more flamboyant than usual to fly my freak artistic side! And attempt to be an ally.

The US taking over Canada within 50 years is a pretty safe bet.

The main factor won't be cultural, but geostrategic though. The Western side of the US will face increasingly frequent droughts and desertification, eventually collapsing the agricultural production of the great plains. The southern regions from texas to Florida will be affected by deadly heatwaves due to the wetbulb effect, causing mass panic and migration to the north.
Of course, the US government would much rather preserve the illusion that it cares about self-determination, territorial integrity and stuff like that (though history tells us it only does so as long as other nations... take its interests into account), and convince Canada to become its willing breadbasket and freshwater distributor (i.e. a vassal). Unfortunately, the speed at which global warming is happening may prevent any kind of peaceful economic or diplomatic arrangement. It used to be that such apocalyptic events were predicted for the end of the century (around the 2070s or thereabout), but climate change has been accelerating fast, and a lot of studies are now predicting all that for around 2050. I've seen at least one study predicting the collapse of global agriculture as early as 2040! That one was probably a bit pessimistic, but there's no denying the fact that the aquifers on which the US relies are drying up fast. On a a global level the WHO has predicted that half of humanity will start finding freshwater scarce in... 2025, with actual depletion hitting that same half around 2040.

So yeah, Canada is definitely on the list, no question about that. But I'm sure if you buy a MAGA hat now and vote Conservative, it'll all work out. ;)

Nah. We just got to embrace Cali, Oregon, Washington and Minnesota when they come calling [and they'll have leverage] while the extremely poverty stricken red states cannibalize each other and try to take blues. This might require western Canada hasn't split off yet, or maybe that'd make amalgamation easier.

'Nine Nations of North America' time, only bloodier.

'Ecotopia' way out west - California, Oregon, Washington, British Colombia, Alaska, and maybe Yukon Territory. Environmentally aware, high tech, tending towards socialism lite, and probably prosperous.

'Dixie' down south - Florida, Alabama, Geogia (maybe), Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, couple other poverty-stricken red states.   Theocratic, marred by racial violence, ignorance, and corruption. A

tumultuous region.

For the time being DC holds sway over what's left of the US.

Canada? Dunno? Maybe Quebec will get ideas...again.

I wouldn't fret it.  The dems are going to rally prior to the midterms and stay in power.  Not sure what the preferred media term will be but something like red backlash or blue rebound.  The current admin is working hand in hand with the NGOs and left think tanks to secure our democracy.  They'll get results.  Because the average American hates the automobile and fossil fuels and animal protein.

Y’all fucking please stop. It’s not helpful, and People Whom You Know live here, too.

There are also local exceptions to your descriptors of “extreme poverty states”. I will point out that Atlanta is the growth engine of the southeastern US, and the majority of the population of the now-purple state of Georgia lives here.

I strongly object to @ThinkerX’s description of Atlanta (being part of the state of Georgia) as being “theocratic…and marked by ignorance and corruption.”

Dude, FUCK YOU. I’ve been here for nearly 25 years (two months short of that) and have been a real part of the change here in this state/metro region/the former Congressional district of Newt Gingrich that is now BLUE.

What have you done but deliver the mail in Alaska??

i actually suspect that should the R's in Georgia decide to join a new confederacy, Atlanta would opt to secede from that state. Same goes for other bluish cities in red states. The R's would find this unacceptable - my suspicion is they need the revenue those metropolises produce far more than they will ever willingly admit to their base.

Suppose this is an awkward time to mention I'm moving back to Florida in a month.... :leaving:

Hah. I'm visiting family in Florida in a month myself... but only staying a week or so. Not going to enjoy the heat and humidity.

What convinced you, the Theocracy, the racial violence, the ignorance, or the corruption?

I am 80% sure it was the corruption, with some 20% chance that the Theocracy sealed the deal. As well all know, you are theocrazy, for theocracies. At least my godless theory. :D

Just got back from Gainesville from June 15-22 (which, tbc, is not where I'm moving).  Every day was at least 95 with a million percent humidity.  On the flight back I of course had a layover in Atlanta and as we were landing the pilot mentioned it was a cool 100 degrees there.  Even the airport was warm.  Oh, and the Atlanta layover reminded me that Atlanta no longer has smoking areas inside the airport.  Damned theocratic hellscape!!!

Anyway, really not looking forward to moving in this weather.

The women.

Disgusting actions and I hope charges are pressed. I did see yesterday the guy announced he dropped out of the race after this and locked his account or some such.

Again, piercing the facade that this has anything to do with pro-life. At it's core, it is about controlling and punishing women.

I wish the glib "takeover Canada" bullshit, that's been getting spewed over the last 2 threads, could give it a rest.

It's tasteless and offensive.

Agreed.

Same goes for the desire to see the nation split and fragment. The same people who say that are the same people who say "protect our democracy"

And religion gets another win. At the end of the day I don't think a coach praying after a game is that big of a deal, my coach always held a prayer circle after football games, but the logic behind the ruling is baffling and shows how disingenuous this court is. With a straight face they're saying that because the game was over the coach was no longer coaching. WTF is that? Your coach is your coach in the fucking offseason, let alone after a game when you might still be with him for several hours after road games. Kavanaugh was the captain of his HS basketball team and knows this damn well. They're so full of shit.

Never gonna happen. Can you imagine the MAGA crowd  happily swallowing Quebec?

Hahaha!

This sharply reminds me of a business trip I was taking in the 1990s to the US. Waiting at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, there were two American men in front of me cursing this fucking godforsaken airport in this fucking godforsaken city in this fucking godforsaken country where there was no smoking anywhere once you crossed US customs. They couldn’t wait to get out of this fucking, fucking country.

That’s pretty much all it it was. I was being glib and backhandedly simplistic. I’m sorry, @Chataya de Fleury
