Hamilton has been pretty withering about F1 teams refusing to sign Jamie Chadwick despite 2 (soon to be 3) W Series titles. It sounds like he and Mercedes are looking into helping the progression out of W Series, whether that's encouraging an F1 team to step up or doing something in F2 to provide a progression route.

The fact that Williams seems to be mulling over Logan Sargeant and apparently isn't even considering Chadwick despite having two (soon to be three) titles and him having jack shit, is ridiculous. At least de Vries has an F2 championship and a Formula E title that makes him a somewhat more logical choice than Sargeant.

Well, winning W Series three times is all good and well, but that's the equivalent to a regional / national Formula 3 series. FIA F3 cars are already quite a step up, let's not even talk of Formula 2. Giving Chadwick an F1 cockpit would do her a disservice. And plainly, if she really wants to graduate to F1, then the years after her first W Series win have been wasted. Meanwhile, she isn't really a youngster anymore, being only half a year younger than Max Verstappen. I don't know about any kind of hype about her in the UK, but if truth be told, it doesn't look like she is F1 material.

Well, that's the point, it's become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The progression was supposed to be W-F3-F2-F1 (also, W Series is a support race to F1, which in terms of profile lifts it far above a regional/national F3 series), to the point that Chadwick didn't want to race in W Series in the second or third year and wanted to get out of the way to give someone else a leg-up. However, despite everyone agreeing how the progression was supposed to work, nobody followed through in the higher formula, creating this logjam situation. F3 did at least give one female driver (Sophia Florsch) a seat in 2020, pre-W Series being a thing, but seemed to sour on the idea pretty quickly (she wasn't great though, and also had a lot of mechanical failures).

At just turned 24 it's true that Chadwick's starting to get aged out of contention, like Suzie Wolff before her (except that Chadwick's form has been far superior to Wolff's), but she's three years younger that Nick de Vries, who is in serious contention for the Williams seat with Sargeant.

Audi will take over Sauber, or at least buy a controlling interest, and enter as a manufacturer team. That's quite a formidable threat to the existing teams, although I assume it'll take them a few years to get up to speed.

Porsche are likely to enter as an engine supplier, starting with Red Bull, although apparently some at Red Bull Powertrains and Honda are keen to continue their alliance, and Honda may consider carrying on as an engine supplier/advisor in some other fashion (they don't want to lose their foot in the door in F1 and then have to start from scratch a few years later again if they decide to come back).

The boys at the top of the table (LeClerc, Verstappen, etc.) are going to have to start at the back of the grid at Spa, as they have all used up too many engines and have to take a penalty.

That should make for some interesting action on Sunday.

Porsche is expected to buy a 50 percent share in Red Bull, who are developing their own engine for 2026. Not sure that Porsche can pose as an engine supplier in that setup. Maybe Red Bull Powertrains will be renamed, but it would be a bit lame if there wasn't some genuine input by Porsche, like with Mercedes in the Ilmor days.

It's a shame we're not getting a full new team entry from anyone, although Andretti is apparently an outside shout for 2024 or 2025 (though there's also a chance he buys Haas). Having 22 or 24 drivers on the grid would be a lot better for getting fresh talent into the mix.

We had 12 teams as recently as 2012 and 11 as recently as 2014. Having just 10 teams has been a fairly unusual and fairly recent phenomenon.

That was before Liberty Media took over. The new Concorde Agreement has effectively shut the door for new teams.

I don't claim to know anything about F1's finances, but generally speaking in sports the cost to expand and create a new team far exceeds whatever revenue is lost in the short term by a reduction in the TV shares. The buy in money is split among the existing teams and given there's only ten, that should fetch quite a large sum. And with more teams means more sponsorship money and potentially will help when they do their next TV deal.

Personally I’d love to see another team or two to increase the competition and variety but I can understand the reluctance of the existing teams: F1’s global viewership has expanded in recent years, especially in the lucrative US.  They’ve already done the hard work to expand the commercial potential, so any new teams who join now are just jumping onto the speeding train rather than helping to push the train.

Phenomenal win by Verstappen today.  If winning from 10th wasn’t impressive enough last time, now he won from 14th.  The speed advantage of the RB was just shocking this weekend, although in fairness to Verstappen as a driver he also had a huge gap over Perez in the same car.  So credit due to both car and driver, I would say.

Lots of good racing and competition elsewhere in the order today but it’s a real pity none of it mattered for the WDC.

I think Alonso’s comment on Hamilton over the team radio was probably accurate.  At least Alonso could stay in the race.
