Which Targaryen retrieved blackfire from the pyre?

Recommended Posts

This is an excellent question. GRRM uses poems from William Blake for some of this inspiration, and this stanza about god's creation of the "Tyger" is probably relevant:

In what distant deeps or skies.

Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire?

What the hand, dare seize the fire?

When Dany finally rides Drogon, she remarks upon his "molten" eyes. That may be her moment of seizing the fire.

I think Maegor may be the originator (first player?) of the "Game" of Thrones. He built the "Chutes and Ladders" (or "Snakes and Ladders") setting known as Maegor's Holdfast. It probably makes a difference if the sword was still hot or already cool when he took it from the pyre, but it shows that he was a player in the game.

The "fyre" name of the sword is also a clue for us that dragons and tygers (or cats in general) are related in ASOIAF. Interesting that Arya's training in sword fighting involves catching cats. In Maegor's Holdfast.
