Having kids means I spend a lot more time watching all the Disney movies I never saw before. Allows me to have a bit of a fresh eye on the whole lot, as well as being able to see how young children experience them on first showing.

Little Mermaid.. also not that good even if the song list is brilliant.

Lion King is exactly as good as I remembered.

The Princess and the Frog was a lot better than I expected as it’s a movie rarely mentioned, my kids didn’t like it though.

Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and The Lion King are 'my era' for Disney - going to see them at the cinema when they came out. They are like a memory of my youth. Anything after that I saw with cynical adult eyes.

I'm not big into Frozen, but like you I can see why it is popular. I do have a soft spot for Tangled though.

I have a sweet spot for Zootopia.
- It's got an entertaining plot.
- The rabbit and the fox seem to have actual chemistry.
- The rabbit looks kind of cute.
- The title reads like that of a bad porn website.
- Shakira's song is cool.
- The movie somehow manages to say the very opposite of what it sought to say.
- Lots of adult jokes in there ("rabbits are good at multiplying," hur hur)
- It ushered in the golden age of furries.
Some animated movies are perverted by dark twisted individuals ; Zootopia seems to have been made explicitly for that purpose.
I'm sure some of the execs at least knew what they were doing.

My three year nephew won't even watch traditional animation. I tried to show him the Duck Tales movie from the 90's but if it's not computer generated he's basically like "wtf is this shit."

So him this and learn him something:

I prefer Tangled as well. Great visuals and pacing and the jokes and sight gags always land.

I was super impressed when I saw this one. I get why it was so successful.

Ah there’s no comfort like watching Disney classics as an adult (well there is, filmstrip version of fairy tales, I can’t even discuss those without crying).

But I’m no big on post-2000 Disney. Tangled is a gem and the best modern Disney film, far superior to Frozen and Moana and the Princess and the Frog which are okay but kinda meh. I always found Brave an atrocity even though the soundtrack is good (or was that Pixar?) From the non-princess category, another underrated gem is Brother Bear, a soft spot is Ratatouille.

My adult favorites are Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Lion King*. And my childhood favorites were Pocahontas and Lady and the Tramp. Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Bambi, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Aladdin and Aristocats are all lovely too and I learned to appreciate Mulan as an adult.

*Edit: of course Anastasia outclasses them all, but I still don’t  count it as Disney.

Brave and Ratatouille are Pixar films.

I enjoyed Zootopia and Wreck-it Ralph, anyways, but looking over the list of post-2000 Walt Disney Animations films, I've seen very few.

As far as child abuse Futurama jokes go, I always preferred the one in the original finale

Quote

Bender: Hey, your kid's pretty good, how hard did you say you had to hit him?

Wealthy Lady: Faaairly hard.

"Is all the labor done by children? / not the whipping!" is also the only really good joke in that terrible Eye-Phone episode. They really knew how to mine humor from hurting children.

Zootopia loses quite a lot of points for accidentally being horrendously racist.

I haven't seen that many of the post-2000 lot but I like Bolt, Moana is obviously cool and Raya is good fun if you don't get too het up by how obviously Avatar inspired it. Wreck it Ralph is alright.

Lion King slaps harder than anything else Disney as a kid or an adult. Sleeping Beauty never gets enough love. And The Rescuers Down Under is a strong dark horse.

Non-Disney category, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West is a gamer changer.

I loved The Rescuers Down Under, it was on my list after Duck Tales. I may have to watch it myself now.

I have watched more Paw Patrol than a grown man should ever be subjected to.

Peppa Pig, man.  That's where it's at.  Gotta get on the Peppa Pig band wagon...

There's never been a "golden age" for furries.  Never should be.

There's a meme floating around on how Zootopia was ever green lit...can't get a proper image of it but:

HOW I THINK ZOOTOPIA WAS MADE

First Person at Disney Animation: We should make a buddy cop movie.

Other Person: Did you say "Bunny Cop Movie"...?

First Person: ...yes...

Look into my eyes brother, "We're simpatico." I might watch that later as well.

Also, since this is a nostalgia trip, the short Rikki-Tikki-Tavi starring Orson Welles is fire.

I've heard it's been toned down now but there was a while where none of the English-speaking people I knew with kids would let them watch Peppa because the way she talks was turning them into total brats.

Weirdly, that never translated over to German Peppa, I guess because what sounds brusque or rude in English is just normal German grammar (which also accounts for some stereotypes).

I also watched Prey over the weekend and think it was better than everything after Predator 2. The worst parts for me were the horrible CGI animals and how they looked and acted.

Spoiler

The bear was by far the worst. It's eating a fresh kill and they are 30' above it and it smells them???? They were so high that their scent would have carried far far away, plus it was eating and it's nose was  covered in blood, no way it smells them!

Also having her understand his laser targeting system better than he does? She saw it once and was able to figure out how to use it to kill him? How did he not know that the sharp pointy things go where the red dotty things are!

I knew the gun looked familiar and the fact that they showed it with the name meant something but I couldn't place it.

All in all enjoyable and loved the scenery. Why didn't they give us the French dialogue on screen so we could read it? I kept thinking they would or they would switch them to English so I knew what they were saying but it never happened and by then I said screw it and didn't turn my own settings on.

He knows. But he doesn't realise she has the mask and has set him up with it until it's too late. He underestimates her, as do all the other characters. That's the point.

Oh, that's one of the best things about the film. It makes the trappers as alien to the (English speaking) viewer as they are to the Comanche characters, if not quite as alien as the Predator. The European characters in this film are 'othered' to the viewer by the decision not to subtitle them or have them speak in English, in the process shifting our perspective and avoiding any risk of losing the immersion we have with the Comanche. It's genius.

Yeah, CGI beasties can be very hit an miss, and they did both in this movie. Still, I've seen worse.

Spoiler

My French is virtually non-existent, but I'm pretty sure the last surviving Voyageur referred to her as a dog just before he died. "You're going to die like a dog." or something like that. "Chien" was the only word I recognized.

It's the emotionality, not the dialogue. You people and your "words".
